In 1975, Clara Barton National Historic Site was established as a unit of the National Park Service at her Glen Echo, Maryland home.
The first National Historic Site dedicated to the accomplishments of a woman, it preserves the early history of the American Red Cross and the last home of its founder.
Clara Barton spent the last 15 years of her life in her Glen Echo home, and it served as an early headquarters of the American Red Cross as well.

The National Headquarters of the American Red Cross is located at Seventeenth and D Streets, N.W. in Washington, D.C. Trowbridge and Livingston designed this building in 1915, which after Miss Barton's death in 1912 became the first permanent home of the American Red Cross.
Note the portrait on the wall in the center of the picture: the charcoal-enhanced photo of Miss Barton at age 54 is the likeness of her that appears in the essay on this Web site.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Clara Barton worked in this building (the third oldest in Washington, D.C.), which was the Patent Office at the time.
