		Clara Haskil (January 7, 1895 - December 7, 1960) was a classical pianist.

		Haskil was born in Bucharest, Romania and studied in Vienna under Richard Robert (whose memorable pupils included Rudolf Serkin and George Szell) and briefly with Ferruccio Busoni.

		Haskil learned Feux Follets by hearing Vlado Perlemuter play the piece at a private function; then she performed the work a few days later and confessed afterwards that she had never seen the score.
		Clara, during the whole of this adventure, showed great courage and reserves of energy, which enabled her to overcome her exhaustion in spite of the precarious state of her health.
		Haskil traveled to Brussels with her sister, Lili, in December 1960 to begin a concert tour with the Belgian violinist Arthur Grumiaux, arriving a few days after a triumphant concert with him in Paris.

		Clara étudiera finalement chez le professeur Richard Robert (il aura entre autre comme élève Rudolf Serkin), un très bon pédagogue qui voit une enfant triste.
		Haskil interpréter Schumann, Chopin, Ravel, c'est toucher de près à la révélation de la nature de ces hommes, des motifs qui les ont fait écrire - et qui les ont fait écrire comme ils l'ont fait.

		"The Clara Haskil Competition was founded in 1963 to honour and perpetuate the memory of the incomparable Swiss pianist, of Romanian origin, who was born in Bucharest in 1895.
		Amendments to the regulations included the opening to the public of all stages of the Competition, the lowering of the upper age limit from 30 to 27 and the setting of a compulsory piece for the first round, namely the "Abegg Variations" Op.
		Finghin appeared on the middle day, playing Schubert's final Sonata in B flat D.960 (a work which Clara Haskil performed extremely regularly in her recitals during the 1950s) and two works by Franz Liszt, "Soirées de Vienne", based on waltzes by Schubert, and the Sixth Hungarian Rhapsody.

		In #23, Haskil and Sacher are wonderfully in sync throughout: a magically lyrical 1st mvt., a serenely beautiful slow mvt., and a sprightly finale, with some lively wind playing (especially by the principal bassoon).
		#20 was one of the staples of Haskil's repertoire, and she left several recordings, both studio and "live," that are preferable to this one under Markevitch.
		Right now, my favorite Haskil #20 is probably her live recording with Paul Hindemith on a different M&A CD (coupled with Haskil's dazzling performance of Hindemith's Theme & Variations "The Four Temperaments" under the composer's direction).
