Clare UK - History of Clare
This short guide to the history of Clare has been written in response to many requests for a successor to the author’s History of Clare (Heifer, 1928), now out of print.
The author wishes to take this opportunity of again thanking her friends for the help and encouragement which they have given to her work.
The first edition of A Short History of Clare is out of print and the author is glad to present a revised edition, rewritten in part; there are two new illustrations.

Elizabeth de Clare - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elizabeth de Clare (September 16, 1295 – 1360) was the heiress to the lordships of Clare, Suffolk in England and Usk in Wales.
She was one of three daughters of Gilbert de Clare, 7th Earl of Hertford and Joan of Acre, and sister of the infant fourth earl, also Gilbert de Clare.
The survival of many of her household records has been a boon to medieval scholars, particularly those focusing on medieval women; a study of Elizabeth by Frances Underhill, For Her Good Estate: The Life of Elizabeth de Burgh, is largely based upon these records.

 The de Clare Family
However, like so many of the de Clares before him, Gilbert was a brave and fierce fighter; he loyally supported the king, and fought and died for Edward II at Bannockburn against the Scots in 1314.
This was probably due to the fact that the vast fortune acquired by the de Clare family was now divided between the three sisters, to be spent on a first come, first served spending spree by whoever the King granted permission to marry the daughters.
espite the wealth and importance of the de Clare family in the medieval period, little remains to be seen of the family; certainly the surname no longer remains an especially common one, as the last surviving de Clares were all daughters.
