Clare, a four-seater, could prove to be one of the prize battles of Election 2007.
There is one Fine Gael seat in the constituency, currently held by Pat Breen, joined this time on the ticket by Senator and former TD Madeline Taylor Quinn, and Cllr Joe Carey, a son of the former long-standing FG deputy Donal Carey.
Meaney also has a very visible campaign touring the constituency in his Green bio diesel van, and with the current water controversies in Galway and Ennis could benefit if there is a national swing to the Greens.

I, as representing the constituency of Clare, want to protest against the attitude of the Minister both with respect to depriving Clare of all possibility of benefiting by its natural resources, and there were natural resources— [1131] from which Clare could naturally expect in time to benefit if the State had not stepped in.
This scheme and the Shannon itself was one of the natural resources of Clare, and Clare has been asked to give this subsidy to this national enterprise.
At the moment what Clare is suffering is the loss of £400 on lands taken for the purposes of the scheme.

The responsibility for conducting the election in each of the four constituencies rests with a returning officer appointed by the Minister for the Environment, who must be a county registrar or a city or county sheriff.
All the ballot papers for the constituency are thoroughly mixed and sorted according to the first preferences recorded for each candidate, invalid papers being rejected.
The Court may declare the whole or part of the election in the constituency void and, in that event, a fresh election will be held to fill the vacant seats.

Labour Affairs Minister Tony Killeen today refused to resign after it emerged that his Co Clare constituency office sent two letters to the Minister for Justice urging that a convicted child rapist be freed.
Another Clare TD, Pat Breen of Fine Gael was heavily criticised last October for making representations for an early release for Nugent in a Dáil question on behalf of Nugent's family.
He added: "There was no way of checking exactly what had happened but I was somewhat concerned and continued to follow up during Christmas when I had time to follow up and I did feel that there was some risk that they might have sought his release and on that basis I clarified the position".

Although the tragic murder of his brother by the Black and Tans left an indelible mark on Patrick Shanahan, he held no bitterness and was always anxious to end the hatred and bitterness that were generated by both the War of Independence and the Civil War.
Most of his old friends and comrades predeceased him but he will be remembered in Clare for the work he did on the county council and during his short term as a Dáil Deputy.

As of June next year residents of areas such as Shannon Banks, Westbury and Parteen and the entire county of Clare will leave Munster and join a new constituency of the 'North West' to include counties as far flung as Donegal and Monaghan.
"The whole county of Clare will be moved lock stock and barrel into the North West," confirmed a spokesperson for the department of the environment and local government.
