 Ireland South: Spectacular election successes for Socialist Party
In a radio programme in which all the parties participated during the election campaign in the constituency, the Green Party candidate Trevor Seargant (leader of the Greens) claimed that Clare Daly’s opposition to the Bin Taxmeant that she would be responsible for the privatisation of the refuse service.
Such is the respect for Clare Daly that one canvasser encountered a sign on a door which said: "No canvassers please – apart from Clare Daly." In another incident a voter driving a brand new BMW pulled up to Socialist Party canvassers and asked them if they were campaigning for Clare.
Clare was in third position all the way through until the final count.

The party fielded several candidates in the local elections and both Higgins and Clare Daly were elected to Fingal County Council.
Clare Daly in Dublin North also polled well and had 3,324 votes when eliminated in the seventh round.
Daly topped the poll in the Swords electoral division with 1,281 votes.

In fairness, Clare could hardly have done more than steal into a six-point lead, 0-13 to 0-7, with 21 minutes remaining, but the Rebels aren’t All-Ireland champions for nothing and they staged an irresistible revival to outscore their provincial rivals by nine points to two from there to the finishing line.
Clare also had a couple of early wides from midfielder Colin Lynch before Tony Carmody opened the scoring with a neat tap-over from close to goal in the fourth minute.

Originally, the Dalys were to be found in Co Westmeath, but there were sub-septs in many different localities in counties Clare, Cork and Galway.
In the last century, Marcus Daly, from Ballyjamesduff in Co Cavan, who emigrated to California, became enormously wealthy from his mining activities and was nicknamed the "Copper King".
The Dalys claim descent from one of Ireland's epic heroes from Celtic mythology, Niall of the Nine Hostages.

Before jailing the politicians, Mr Justice Iarlfhlaith O'Neill said he appreciated that Joe Higgins and Clare Daly breached court orders as part of a political campaign and that their motivation was sincere.
The Minister for the Environment, Martin Cullen, has accused jailed politicians Joe Higgins and Clare Daly of 'political grandstanding of the highest scale'.

Although Socialist Party members in Ireland were disappointed not to get Clare elected, they pointed out that this was a similar platform to Joe’s near-success in the 1996 Dublin West by-election, from which the party went on to win a seat in 1997.
He then went on to explain that he had been a Fine Gael voter all his life but would be giving Clare his first preference vote in the elections because of her principled stand and her campaigning work.

Higgins and his party colleague, Councillor Clare Daly, were each jailed for a month for defying a high court injunction prohibiting them from obstructing refuse collections.
The severity of the sentence imposed on Higgins and Daly came as a shock to their supporters, but mainstream politicians were unsympathetic.
That joke gained a new relevance in Dublin last Friday when the dail's only Socialist Party member, Joe Higgins, was jailed by the high court for leading a campaign against controversial new charges on Dubliners for the collection of their rubbish.
