Clare Places - Clarecastle (Historical Background)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Clarecastle takes its name from CLÁR ADAR DA CHORADH or CLÁR-ATHA-DA-CHORADH, meaning the bridge between two weirs, which almost describes the castle's function, situated as it is on an island of the Fergus River at its narrowest navigable point.
Clarecastle became the port for Ennis and by 1837 was used for the export of grain and the importation of coal.
Another account of 1830 described Clarecastle as "luxuriant in dung and pigs." Agrarian outrages, committed by the Terry Alts, kept the entire area in a state of unrest for most of 1830 and 1831.

Clarecastle kept up the pressure and it was only a powerful defence in which McGrath, Harrington, Hogan and the goalie shared equally, that saved Feakle at this stage.
Play continued on level terms and a Clarecastle point was replied to by another for Feakle which proved to be their last score, for the final ten minutes were again in favour of Clarecastle, who had come within five points of victory at full-time, the final score being Feakle 4-6, Clarecastle 3-4.

That was aided considerably by the consistent play of Jonathan Clancy at midfield, the solid covering of their backs notable for the reason that Stephen Sheedy at centre-back dealt capably with the threat from inter-county player Tony Griffin and by their ability to penetrate in attack.
By the break, it was 3-6 to 0-6 for Clarecastle, with Hehir having contributed four of the challenger's scores.
Ballyea made a very determined start to the second half, scoring three points to Clarecastle's one inside four minutes, but it was a case of flattering to deceive.
