The Music Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is honored and delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Clarence Barlow as the new Corwin Endowed Chair of Composition, beginning in fall, 2006.
Barlow's career achievements fulfill the Corwin's vision of fostering a link between continuing excellence in traditional approaches to composition while also recognizing the emerging role of music in the media arts and technology.
Barlow, who studied composition under Bernd Alois Zimmermann (1968-1970) and Karlheinz Stockhausen (1971-1973), is a universally acknowledged pioneer and celebrated composer in the field of electroacoustic and computer music.

La Folia -- Clarence Barlow at Muzifest
Barlow was born in Calcutta, the city he honored in one of his most communicative works, CCU.
Barlow explains the use of Nancarrow's music by its resemblance to the character of the film itself — technically skilled and nonproblematic.
Besides being a representative of the European avant-garde (the meaning of which he expressed beautifully and precisely in the discussion that ended the festival), Clarence Barlow is an outstanding composer —; a vivid imagination, lucid philosophy and prolific output, combined with scientific knowledge.

 Autobusk by Clarence Barlow
Barlow created a computer program, Autobusk, as a compositional assistant; it is a parametric note- sequencer and variation generator.
Barlow’s harmonicity theory can be applied to a complex 17-tone scale (which he used for his automatic piano piece Otoblu), or to something as simple as a pentatonic scale.
Clarence Barlow's AUTOBUSK user manual ("AUTOBUSK: A real-time pitch and rhythm generator") for the Atari ST version (54 pages) is available as report no. 43 (2001) in the series "Musikinformatik & Medientechnik" (ISSN 0941-0309).

From 1961-65 Barlow studied science in Cologne then from 1966-68 taught music theory and conducted a madrigal choir and a youth string-orchestra in India.
In 1980 Barlow published 'Bus Journey to Parametron', a book about his yearlong concern with tonality, and his extremely complex 'Çogluotobüsisletmesi', a piano-work based on his speculations, was first performed.
In 1986 Barlow co-founded the 'Initiative Musik und Informatik Köln' (GIMIK), and in 1988 was the musical director of the 14th International Computer-Music Conference in Cologne.

Clarence was asked by the Bonner Kunsthalle to compose a new music track for a 2 minute film from 1930 by Oskar Fischinger "Study No.6".
Clarence's idea was to measure the bounding boxes of these objects and use the measured parameters for the control of musical parameters, using his own algorithmic composition program AUTOBUSK.
The measured data were sent to Clarence by email, where he started the music generation process.

It was 12 October1989 on the Computer Music Festival (Brussels) that Clarence BARLOW appeared on "my" stage.
When he started to "play" his "Variazone e un pianoforte meccanino" on the Yahama Disklavier, the piano played on itself while the pianist, from a distance to the piano-in-action, was only sitting in an old sofa.
Clarence Barlow (born Calcutta) is living in two towns: Amsterdam and Cologne.

In the beginning of the performance, the piano (= Yamaha Disklavier) played alone: without touching any key, Clarence Barlow, the performer, was sitting down in an old sofa and participated listening from distance to the live performance of his piano.
After a while he went to sit down at the piano, simulated playing with his fingers and gradually he started to interact in realtime with the virtual improviser (the computer-directed piano).
However, this experience in 1989 was a real happy revelation to me. September 2000: Clarence BARLOW has finished his computerprogram and manual AUTOBUSK.
