Clarence Carter - Biography - AOL Music
Singer Clarence Carter exemplified the gritty, earthy sound of Muscle Shoals R&B, fusing the devastating poignancy of the blues with a wicked, lascivious wit to create deeply soulful music rooted in the American South of the past and the present.
Born January 14, 1936, in Montgomery, AL, Carter was blind from birth.
The percolating "Snatching It Back" was Carter's first Atlantic release of 1969 -- its B-side, a remake of James Carr's deep soul classic "The Dark End of the Street," remains one of the singer's most potent efforts, drawing on traditional blues and gospel to explore both the absurdity and anguish of infidelity.

Clarence Carter - Rhythm & Blues at Randy's Rodeo
Clarence Carter is best known to modern audiences for his ribald "Strokin'," a synthesized piece of silliness cut two decades after his prime.
Carter was capable of deep pathos ("Patches") in addition to more libidinous emotions, though songs of cheating and cocksmanship always dominated his repertoire.
Snatchin' It Back: The Best Of Clarence Carter (Rhino, 1992) includes those songs and a bunch more, including Carter's impossibly nasty Yuletide ode, "Back Door Santa." After "Patches" (1970), Carter never reached the Top 40 again, and he began bouncing from label to label.

Clarence Carter : Snatching It Back - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Snatching It Back is a compilation that collects 21 classic sides from Carter's tenure at Atlantic, and by focusing strictly on his output for one label, this set misses the mark as a career retrospective (they could have at least tacked on Carter's lascivious jukebox classic "Strokin'" in the name of a more complete picture).
Snatching It Back is a few notches short of the definitive Clarence Carter collection, but you could hardly ask for a better summation of his Atlantic material.
