Clarence Dill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Clarence Cleveland Dill (September 21, 1884 January 14, 1978) was an American politician from the state of Washington.
His last attempt at elective office was in 1942 when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives.
Dill then served as a member of the Columbia Basin Commission from 1945 to 1948, and as a special assistant to the United States Attorney General from 1946 to 1953.

Dill, an arm's length away, had Jack Morgan and one other offender clutched by the neck in either hand and he was solemnly and systematically butting their heads together until they howled.
Dill seated in a large, cane rocker--which was unquestionably not big enough for his huge person--his feet upon another chair and his hands folded inertly on his drawn-up knees.
Dill became under the earnest tutelage of Charming Billy a shade less ignorant of range ways and of the business of "raising wild cattle for the Eastern markets." He even came to speak quite easily of "outfits" in all the nice shades of meaning which are attached to that hard-worked term.

The Water Rises: Clarence C. Dills Battle for Grand Coulee Dam
Dill's account to Woods is probably fairly accurate: there was a brief disagreement; Dill probably worried that he had gone too far; then, to his relief, the president proposed a low dam that might cost only $40 million.
Dill probably telephoned S. Harper, acting chief engineer of the project, because O'Sullivan soon received a letter from Harper explaining that the low dam was entirely adequate to serve as a base for the high dam.
Clarence Dill was a hero in the eyes of most people and easily the most popular political figure in the state.

 | Book Review | Oregon Historical Quarterly, 104.3 | The History Cooperative
Clarence C. Dill: Life of a Western Politician is a balanced though incomplete account of how a progressive young journalist, lawyer, and former Democratic congressman upset incumbent Republican Miles Poindexter in the 1922 Senate race and went on to serve two terms in the U.S. Senate.
Dill embraced the cause of "the pumpers," those who, in 1918, proposed construction of a dam at Grand Coulee to store water for irrigation and pump it onto the dry plateau above.
Irish writes that "there was no evidence Dill was party to Funkhouser's activities." Still, he argues that "historians are not limited to what can be proven in a court of law" and suggests that the senator "probably engaged in unethical conduct" (p.

Fitz Stapleton soon accounted for Graham Dill with OAs struggling on 9-2 but a captain's innings from Tom Preest, with Jon Freedman adding his assured presence at the other end of the wicket, saw OAs put on 48 for the third wicket.
However, the pair's dismissal only served to bring in the match-winning partnership of Henry (31 not out) and Marc (18) and the OA bowlers were unable to deal with their contrasting styles as well as a few lucky breaks as they were blasted to all parts of the ground.
A wonder one-handed catch from Dill took the scalp of Marc but by that stage OAs had left themselves with too much to do and Henry wrapped up proceedings with another well-executed cover drive which crept over the boundary.

Dill and White depended on one man and two key provisions of the legislation to prevent the harm predicted by the anti-monopolists.
Dill and White argued that the intent of the legislation was not to create an open forum for public debate; as written the bill would prevent such misuse of the airwaves, defeating the Blease amendment.
Dill noted that the language "public interest" was the result of a conference with White when they were seeking additional language to go with "convenience and necessity," which Hoover had used at the radio conferences, borrowing the term from railroad and utility regulation.

The Congressional Record would not be mailable, he said, "if it contained in print what Senators think of the dial telephone system." When Washington Senator Clarence Dill asked why the resolution did not also ban the dial system from the District of Columbia, Glass said he hoped the phone company would take the hint.
Although the telephone company had pressed for the installation of an all-dial system, it acknowledged that it could provide the Senate with phones that worked both ways.
But Senator Dill was not ready to give up.

Democrat Clarence C. Dill wins election to the U.S. Senate from Washington on November 4, 1922.
Dill's victory came as a surprise since he had lost his seat in the House of Representatives in 1918 because of his opposition to U.S. entry into World War I. Votes for him and for other liberal candidates reflected dissatisfaction with the incumbent, Miles Poindexter (1868-1946), and a certain regret for the declaration of war.
