Wijewardene first reached the airwaves as part of the influential band "The Moonstones", led by singer Annesley Malewana, in the 1960s.
Clarence's widow recent filed suit against Sebastian[1], hoping to recover a portion of the income earned thru the use of her late husband's work.

There Wijewardene abandoned a three month planting career at Penrith Estate in Avissawella to start a music career, and fell in love and married the daughter of his landlord in Butugedere.
Clarence began to dominate the music scene from 1965 onwards unmoved by critics who hated the guitar.

Malewana was born in Ratnapura (a city in south-central Sri Lanka), and attended St. Joseph’s College in the capital city of Colombo.
Upon leaving school, he met Clarence Wijewardane, who (with Malewana) formed the group Moonstones.
The songs performed by Malewana and Clarence over their three decade careers have recently been credited, by the group Pahan Silu, as having served to influence them in crafting their unique musical style.

I met Clarence while I was working for Dubai-based Gulf News in the 90s and during the course of an interview to the paper he revealed how it all began.
Clarence, who was living in Ratnapura at the time, too attended this institution which offered a reasonably good English education in an area where there were no English schools.

I actually didn't know that Clarence was born in Matale.
Clarance Wijewardene was born in Matale, and studied at Vijaya College(sinhalese & Tamils mixed school)in Matale while I attended St.Thomas College at Matale.
I have studied in Vaideeswara Vidyalayam in Jaffna in 1958, later at Kandy trinity(1 year) had to leave due to financial dificulties, then to Wesley college, Colombo.

Usha Uthup was a frequent visitor to Vernon’s BBC office at the Langham, opposite Broadcasting House in London, whenever she was in London ‘in concert’ - she even used to sing Sri Lankan ‘baila’ in Vernon’s office - because she knew the people of Sri Lanka so well.
Superstars Clarence Wijeywardene and Annesly Malawana always mentioned Vernon in their concerts in London.
The programme was very successful and Vernon interviewed Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Amaradeva, Asha Bhosle, Usha Uthup, Lata Mangeshkhar, Clarence Wijeywardene, Annesley Malawana,Nimal Mendis, Reginald and Jamila Massey, His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka among a whole host of distinguished personalities.

After a spell in religious broadcasting Vernon was invited to present the first ever Asian programme in English.
Vernon's record selection included Sri Lankan hit makers - Clarence Wijeywardene, Annesley Malawana, Dharmaratne Brothers, La Ceylonians, Indrani Perera, The Gypsies, Dalrene, Sam The Man, Mignone Fernando and the Jetliners, Desmond de Silva, Nimal Mendis and many more - they were reaching the heart of London through the airwaves.
