Quintet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In classical instrumental music, any additional instrument (such as a piano, clarinet, oboe, etc.) joined to the usual string quartet (two violins, a viola, and a cello), gives the resulting ensemble its name, such as "piano quintet", "clarinet quintet", etc. A piece of music written for such a group is similarly named.
In some modern bands there are quintets formed from the same family of instruments with various voices, as an all brass ensemble, or all saxophones, in soprano, alto, baritone, and bass, and sometimes double bass.

Mozart's Clarinet Quintet in A Major, K. This media item will not play in the Internet software you are currently using.
It was with these instruments that Mozart was able to paint a clear and beautifully articulated melody while exploring the contrapuntal texture of blending the primary voice with a small orchestra of different voices.
In this excerpt from the fourth movement of Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A Major, the sensuous voice of the clarinet rises in glorious contrast to the strings then blends its way back into a dialogue of passionately intertwined sonorities.

 The Clarinet
The sopranino clarinet is a popular member of the military band, where its high, shrill tone adds sharpness to the mellow sound of the other woodwind and brass instruments.
The bass clarinet, larger than the alto clarinet and basset horn, is the lowest member of the clarinet family in general use.
The earliest bass clarinets date from the end of the eighteenth century and were probably intended as wind band instruments.

Specifically I recently purchased Talich on Calliope records as part of their string quintets collection and while the string tone on that recording is wonderful the clarinet pales beside Pay's.

Brahms: Clarinet Quintet   (Site not responding. Last check: )
On its first appearance in 1891, Brahms' Clarinet Quintet was immediately recognised as a remarkable achievement, and a century later it still has the power to claim the hearts and minds of players and audiences alike.
Widely regarded as Brahms' supreme achievement in the field of chamber music, the Clarinet Quintet is here placed in the context of the history of the clarinet and its repertory, and of Brahms' own compositions before 1891.
The influence of the Meiningen clarinet virtuoso Richard Mühlfeld unleashed a new vein of creativity in Brahms, and this forms a basis for discussion, together with questions of performance practice (in relation to both clarinet and string quartet) and the legacy of Brahms' clarinet music.

Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, Quintet (DE 3020)
Because the clarinet has been shortened and simplified during the nearly two centuries since Mozart's death, modern instruments are not capable of reaching the low notes in the original works.
When musicians play the Concerto and Quintet on the modern clarinet today, parts of whole phrases are transposed an octave higher.
How musicologists have arrived at these reconstructions of the original versions of Mozart's Clarinet Quintet and Clarinet Concerto makes for fascinating reading in the notes to this CD, but what truly distinguishes the disc is the glowing performances it contains.

Mozart: Clarinet Concerto; Clarinet Quintet~ Fred Sherry is a wonderfull recording of Mozarts clarinet music and when I listen to it I regret that I did not stick with one instrument during my youth since now it is just to late.
Notice that in any review of a recording of Mozart's clarinet works, the musicians are always criticized and critiqued, but there is no critic that even attempts to lay a finger on the compositions themselves, except when praising them.
Unlike other later clarinet works, such as those by C.M. Weber (I also highly recommend Shifrin's rendition of these), which dazzle with their huge dramatic sound and prolonged technical passages, these Mozart pieces are beautiful because of their simple and heartwarming nature.

In jazz music a quintet is any group of five players, usually containing a drum set (pedal bass, snaredrum sometimes brushed, top hat cymbal, brushed cymbal), string bass or electric bass, and groups of one or two of the following instruments, guitar, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, or trombone.

The Clarinet Quintet in A was Reger's last completed work (something of an alcoholic, he died of heart failure at the age of 43).
The themes played by the clarinet have a similar shape: a quickly rising figure followed by a slower falling cadence.
It is true that one does not find the grand gestures of a Tchaikovsky in Reger's music, but in an age that finds such gestures naïve perhaps that is not the liability it once was.

 SA-CD.net - Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, Clarinet Quintet - Marriner/Marriner
For those relatively new to the concerto, there are three major considerations in the performances; whether the soloist utilises a basset clarinet, the utilisation of period versus modern instruments, and whether the speeds tend to be sedate or brisk.
Lower runs have been tranposed upwards for the ordinary clarinet; these aren't noticable unless one is a clarinettist or reads the score, but the basset leads to a darker hue in these infrequent downward excursions where Mozart contrasts the timbre of the instrument against the cellos.
This is because of the excellence of the quintet.

The clarinet family - Clarinet history
Mozart often referred to the beauty of the sound of the clarinet with its similarity to the human voice, and once wrote to his father during a trip to Italy that he longed for clarinets in their orchestras.
There has been speculation that because the clarinet is written in C, that it should be played in modern times either on a C clarinet or an E-flat clarinet because the tone color was what Beethoven had wanted.
The clarinet was in a heavy state of transition in the middle of the 19th century and players would often have extra keys put on their instruments.

First of all, Shifrin's choice of the historically correct bassett clarinet (look carefully at the CD cover and you'll see Shifrin holding two clarinets...the slightly longer one is the bassett clarinet) distinquishes this recording from many others.
The use of the bassett clarinet (which is actually the instrument for which Mozart wrote the concerto) allows the pieces to be performed "the correct way" (shorter than the bassett clarinet, the modern clarinet can no longer play the lowest notes in the concerto; these unplayable notes are usually moved up an octave for performances).
In any case, Marcellus has not recorded the clarinet quintet (either that, or this recording is really hard to find).

Stereophile: A Mosaic of Music: Stereophile's Clarinet Quintet CD
In the Clarinet Concerto K.622, Mozart made especial use of Stadler's innovation, the basset clarinet, with its increased lower register, and he may have intended to employ the same instrument in the Quintet for its deeper sonority.
Now for "Fräulein Klarinette," as he called Mühlfeld, he wrote a Quintet (with Mozart certainly in mind) that was both backward-looking in its Classical touches (note especially the opening of the initial Allegro), yet firmly in his own Romantic tradition of Bohemian dances and atmospherically evocative passages for strings.
Despite the deeply felt melancholy that runs through the Quintet, and which must reflect the composer's own feelings, it is pleasant to think of Dr. Brahms playing the Op.114 Trio, also written for Mühlfeld, as he concertized for the last time at the keyboard.

 Clarinet Quintet, Richard Rodney Bennett
Written for the Warwick Festival in 1992, the Clarinet Quintet opens with a lyrical statement by the clarinet, juxtaposed by an underlying, somewhat tense, comment from the quartet.
The ending of the first movement is one of the most beautiful moments in the work, with the solo clarinet stating the theme one final mesmerizing time, accompanied by lush strings.
The movement opens with a 12-tone based theme darkly stated by the clarinet and is a study in colour and texture, moving on and out of starkness and luxuriance.

The Brahms quintet was recorded live (in multi-channel form) at one of Stockholm’s finest medium sized halls, the Nybrokajen 11, formerly named the Royal Musical Academy of Stockholm.
The audience was specially invited to the recording but remains very quiet throughout, in fact it is not until the end of the piece when the audience applauds that one is made aware of their presence.
Fagéus has performed and recorded the quintet previously (with another string quartet), but Opus3 felt they had to release this version because of the ‘spark’ of the live session, the pure DSD signal path and the multi-channel presentation.
