Topic: Clarinet Sonata No 1 Brahms

Sonata (music) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the classical period and afterwards, sonatas for piano solo were the most common genre of sonata, with sonatas for violin and piano and cello and piano being next.
The sonata da chiesa, generally for one or more violins and bass, consisted normally of a slow introduction, a loosely fugued allegro, a cantabile slow movement and a lively finale in some such binary form as suggests affinity with the dance-tunes of the suite.
The piano sonatas of Scriabin would begin from standard forms of the late romantic period in music, but would progressively abandon the formal markers which were taught, and would be composed as single movement works, he is sometimes thought of as a composer on the boundary between romantic and modern practice of the sonata.

Brahms had chosen to close his creative life with the "Viola Quintet in G Major", Opus III, but was persuaded to reopen it by composing for Mühlfeld.
The Sonata No. 1 in F Minor, Opus 120, and the Sonata No. 2 in Eb, Opus 120, were both composed in the summer of 1894, at Ischl and were first performed for the Meiningen Circle at the Palace of Berchtesgaden.

Indeed, Brahms's famed Sonatas, coupled to Mulhfeld's power of performance, must be viewed as strongly contributory elements to a rejuvenated British wind Sonata tradition which began to appear after 1900.
The clarinet Sonata has always been obscure and is almost completely unknown in contemporary clarinet culture.
However, he is known to have written three other Sonatas: Sonata for violin opus 11 (1897), Sonata for violin in D major (1918) and Sonata for cello in A minor (1927).

The term sonata stems from the Italian word sonare – to sound – and has since the late-16th century specified a work to be played on instruments, as opposed to a cantata, which is to be sung.
The sonata reached perhaps its zenith in the Classical and early Romantic eras, and in particular in the solo piano sonatas of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven; these works are generally in 4 movements (thus adopting the sonata da chiesa model), with the first movement being in sonata form.
The sonata continued to hold sway throughout the Romantic era, as in those by Schubert, Chopin, Brahms, and Listz, and indeed most composers of the 20th wrote solo piano and/or chamber sonatas – though the requisite use of sonata form for the first movement weakened in conjunction with tonality's decline.

Reinagle wrote four piano sonatas around 1790 while he was living in Philadelphia which are generally acclaimed as the finest surviving American instrumental works of the 18th century and which were probably the first piano sonatas written in America (they bear the influence of C.P.E. Bach's empfindsamer Stil and are in two or three movements).
