Brahms is ubiquitous in the structure, in the melodic contours, in the swaying rhythm, in the mastery of traditional counterpoint as well as in the use of subtle harmonies.
Johannes Brahms' Clarinet Sonatas in f minor and e flat major were written during the summer of 1894 in Bad Ischl, the Upper-Austrian spa that for all practical purposes was the secret capital of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy.
Brahms had Mühlfeld play the entire clarinet repertoire for him, also plying him with questions about the technical and tonal characteristics of the instrument.

 CLASSICAL MUSIC ARCHIVES: Brahms Biography
In the age of the bravura concerto, where the solo instrument is often merely accompanied by the orchestra, Brahms, in his Violin Concerto and two piano concertos, wrote in a truly classical manner that treats soloist and orchestra as symbiotic equals in the tradition of Mozart and Beethoven.
Brahms was famously brusque and prickly on the surface, although friends knew this was to guard a very sensitive and vulnerable soul.
The two clarinet sonatas were followed by the B minor Clarinet Quintet, op.

William Henry Bell's Sonata in D minor was composed in Claremont, Cape Town in 1926.
The clarinet Sonata has always been obscure and is almost completely unknown in contemporary clarinet culture.
However, he is known to have written three other Sonatas: Sonata for violin opus 11 (1897), Sonata for violin in D major (1918) and Sonata for cello in A minor (1927).

Island of Freedom - Johannes Brahms
Brahms was a talented pianist, giving his first public recital at the age of 14, and making a living by playing in taverns and dance halls.
More fruitful for Brahms was his meeting with Robert Schumann, who hailed the young composer as the coming genius of German music and arranged for the publication of his first songs and piano sonatas.
Brahms, more than any other composer of the second half of the 19th century, was responsible for reviving what is termed "absolute" music--compositions to be accepted on their own terms as interplays of sound rather than as works that depict a scene or tell a story (program music).

Sonata for Piano and Violoncello in E minor, Op.
Brahms (right) gave his cello sonatas the title of "Sonatas for Piano and Violoncello" -- a clear indication that he regarded the piano as an equal of the other instrument, not as an accompanist.
The F major Sonata is quite a different work, and it is obvious right from the start, the tremolos thrown around between cello and piano bringing forth a liveliness and excitement that hints at bigger things to come.

Sleeve Notes - Brahms: The Two Clarinet Sonatas
Brahms’s two sonatas for clarinet and piano, Op 120, composed in 1894, were followed only by the four Serious Songs and a set of organ chorale preludes (some of which may have been written at earlier times).
The two works recorded here were preceded by the Clarinet Trio in A minor (Op 114) and the great Clarinet Quintet in B minor (Op 115), and all four masterpieces were inspired by the playing of Richard Mühlfeld, principal clarinettist of the Meiningen Orchestra.
Brahms’s orchestral music had always clearly displayed a sympathy for the clarinet, and it is perhaps not surprising that he should in the end have turned to it rather than to any other woodwind instrument.

Brahms captures a spirit of concision and formal innovation within the strict context, and his rather ascerbic personality fits my own rather closely.
The violin sonatas are also enjoyable, but ultimately do not work as well for me as either the piano trios on one end or the clarinet sonatas on the other.
I also value the clarinet sonatas, as they have both a deep melancholy as well as a fluid handling of form.

Former Principal Clarinet with the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas and current Principal Clarinet of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Santa Fe Opera, Todd Levy occupies a prestige not so far from that of Richard Muelfeld, the inspirator of the Brahms clarinet sonatas of 1894.
The E-flat Sonata manages to outshine the already gripping F Minor in tonal luster, as if Levy and Abend had been saving their liquid passion deliberately for this amiable, salon piece.

Milestones of the Millenium: The Clarinet
The playful qualities of the clarinet are brought out in the finale of Brahms's Clarinet Sonata No. 1, performed by Stoltzman and pianist David Deveau in the studio.
The use of the clarinet in both classical and jazz is indicative of the "crossover" influences in world music, a development that is not only exciting but almost necessary for musicians today.
The clarinet is an appealing instrument partly for this reason; it can transform itself into so many personas that it has been chosen by many performers and composers today as the "cutting edge" instrument that defines their music.

Fröst and Pöntinen approach the Sonatas with a fluidity of phrasing that has to have been carefully rehearsed, yet feels utterly spontaneous, and when they're joined by cellist Torleif Thedéen for the Clarinet Trio, the sense of nostalgic melancholy deepens.
For Brahms it was important to devote himself to intimacy and spirituality rather than sensationalism or big effects.

Shifrin sees many important similarities between Brahms' and Schumann's writing for clarinet and piano: "It's never a matter of the piano accompanying the clarinet so much as the clarinet being almost like a third hand of the piano, an extension that's able to sustain and color the sound in ways that the piano can't.
