Franz Tausch, the prominent German clarinetist and teacher, is known to have produced two solo concertos, two double concertos, and an extensive repertoire of duos, trios, and quartets.
Nevertheless, due to their understanding of the most intimate details of clarinet performance, clarinetists themselves may be among the most qualified to write idiomatic works for the instrument.
These works reflect the unique attributes of each individual clarinetist’s performing skills, the qualities and limitations of the types of clarinets being used in Italy at the time, performance practice issues unique to the region, and the stylistic and artistic climate that was nineteenth-century Italy.

Clarinet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is not uncommon for clarinetists to employ methods to soften the pressure on both the upper teeth and inner lower lip by respectively attaching pads to the top of the mouthpiece and putting (temporary) padding on the front lower teeth, commonly from folded paper.
However, many clarinetists and conductors prefer to play parts originally written for obscure instruments such as the C or D clarinets on B♭ or E♭ clarinets, which are of better quality and more prevalent and accessible.
In 1812, Ivan Mueller, a Russian-born clarinetist and inventor, developed a new type of pad which was covered in leather or fish bladder.

In 1923 he recorded with the New Orleans Rhythm Kings; according to Rhythm Kings leader Paul Mares, Murray was not a regular member of the band, but was a friend who sometimes sat in with them.
Ted Lewis said that Murray was the greatest clarinetist he ever had in his band-- high praise indeed since Jimmy Dorsey and Benny Goodman had also been in Lewis's band.

Israeli clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein brought virtuousity to his performance with the Miami Symphony Orchestra.
Cast in the same lyrical, introspective style as the G-minor fiddle concerto, the drama and virtuosity are more muted and the tunes less indelible, though Bruch's unerring craftsmanship remains.
Alexander Fiterstein has become a popular Miami visitor in recent seasons, and the young Israeli clarinetist's airtight technique and fluent virtuosity made a solid case for this offbeat work's virtues.

Music Preview: PSO clarinetist votes 'no' on vibrato for classical works
Even though the piece was written in 1948 for jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman, who premiered it with his own gentle vibrato, PSO principal clarinetist Rusinek said he won't be using one, partly because he doesn't really consider the concerto a jazz piece.
Like most top clarinetists, Rusinek learned that vibrato is verboten from his teachers, including his very first one, when he was about 10.
Finally, Richard Stoltzman, one of the best-known clarinet soloists in the world, says he thinks the no-vibrato rule might have something to do with the fact that jazz clarinet soloists are often in the spotlight, leading bands, bending and swaying, interacting with the audience.

Although the development of jazz and the performers who played it have been the subject for numerous jazz historians, there are still scant resources available for a musician to learn jazz clarinet style.
The ease with which a musician can emulate an early jazz clarinetist depends on the amount of time devoted to listening and emulating whatever recordings are available.
This study is an attempt to shorten this learning process by providing a series of transcriptions and analyses that identify and document specific melodic and harmonic traits that form the solo vocabulary of Johnny Dodds.

Rautavaara's style, which Stoltzman describes as "tonality combined with this octatonic scale that adds a minor second, giving the music a bittersweet quality," fits the tonal and expressive qualities of the clarinet and, not incidentally, strikes a chord with audiences that tend to be wary of new music.
The 63-year-old clarinetist, who has performed frequently in Richmond and qualifies as at least an honorary Virginian for having married Lucy Shelton of Newport News, is something of an expert on wary audiences.
To play anything other than the Mozart, over and over, means a solo clarinetist faces an ongoing fight to persuade conductors, orchestra administrators and listeners to accept the modern scores that make up the majority of the clarinet's concert repertory.
