	Clark Air Base - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Clark Air Base was first established as Fort Stotsenberg in 1903, a cavalry post of the U.S. Army, with its garrison Troop F, 1st Cavalry.
		In 1949, the base was transferred from the Army to the U.S. Air Force, and was known as Clark Air Base (or Clark AB).
		Clark Air Base was completely evacuated of all but security personnel on June 10, 1991, two days before Mount Pinatubo began the summer-long series of eruptions which destroyed the upper 1000 feet of its peak.

		Clark Air Base was the largest overseas U.S. military base in the world, with 156,204 acres.
		Volcanic damage and uncertainty regarding future eruptions resulted in the decision to relinquish Clark Air Base even before a final base agreement was negotiated with the Government of the Philippines; the base was formally turned over to the Philippine Government in late November 1991.
		Clark died on May 2, 1919 in a seaplane crash in Panama and is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery.

		There was a story going around the base that a band of natives had the audacity to steal a fire truck right out of the station and run it out the gate with lights flashing and sirens blaring.
		Clark was on a high plateau, so typhoons didn't usually make it to the base, although several tried when I was there.
		Air Police were fondly referred to as 'Apes.' Kids said that the dreaded EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) kept a map of the airbase with colored pins showing where they confiscated their best weaponry.

		Clark’s request was approved, and with approval Clark transferred to the North Island Flying School in San Diego, Calif. On May 3, 1917, Clark received his rating as a junior military aviator.
		Clark’s flights were much to the delight of residents, who were frequent spectators to his low-level flights over the cities on Oahu.
		Clark Air Base served the military well during the Korean and Vietnam wars, and it was the first stop of freedom for many returning prisoners of war from Vietnam.
