SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY, 1/22/04: Forty-three acres known as Sparta Fields along Route 94 are now protected as open space thanks to a partnership between the nonprofit Trust for Public Land (TPL) and Sparta Township.
"Towns throughout New Jersey and nationwide are faced with tough decisions regarding how to provide adequate recreational amenities and open space for their growing populations," said Angelou Ezeilo, project manager for the Trust for Public Land.
The New Jersey Highlands, which encompass Sparta Township, Sussex County and beyond, have been losing roughly 5,000 acres to development each year over the past decade.

East Greenwich Township was created by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 10, 1881 from the eastern part of Greenwich Township and the western part of Mantua Township.
The bill creating the new township was passed by the House by a vote of 43 to 2.
In 1881, the size of the Township was said to be 11.76 square miles, however the 2001 New Jersey Municipal Data Book states that it is currently 14.75 square miles.

The total number of Swedish settlers in Southern Jersey is not known, but in 1693, long after the Swedes ceased to exercise any control over the country, it was reported by Peter Stuyvesant that there were 1,000 Swedes in the territory who retained their Swedish language and customs.
The half of New Jersey which the two Quakers Fenwick and Byllinge had bought from Lord Berkeley was an undivided interest, but after 1673-74, Cateret obtained a new grant which divided the State geographically and gave him the northern portion of the State.
These early New Jersey colonial governments, asserted, 100 years before the American Revolution, substantially the same principle of sovereignty of the people themselves, which was later set forth in the Declaration of Independence.
