Clarke County, named for Revolutionary War hero, General George Rogers Clarke, was formed in 1836 from Frederick County, Virginia.
This creek arises in the vicinity of Winchester in Frederick County and drains the western portion of the Lower Shenandoah Valley, empty in into the Potomac from West Virginia to Maryland to the north.
This is a neat photograph of a forested thicket on the Clarke County side of the Opequon River on the upstream side of the bridge shown above.

 Burned Record Counties
Several Virginia counties, most of them in the eastern part of the state, have suffered tremendous loss of their early records during the intense military activity that occurred during the Civil War, and others lost records in fires.
As always, when researching county and city court records, first consult the list of what is available on microfilm at the Library of Virginia.
Nansemond: created in 1652, county court records were destroyed in three separate fires, the earliest of which consumed the house of the court clerk in April 1734 (where the records were kept at that time), and the last on 7 February 1866.
