		Clarke is considered one of the Big Three of science fiction, along with Robert A. Heinlein and Isaac Asimov; he is the only one still alive.
		Clarke was born in Minehead in Somerset, England, and as a boy enjoyed stargazing and enthusiastically read old American science-fiction magazines (pulp magazines, many of which made their way to England as ballast in ships).
		After secondary school, and studying at Richard Huish College, Taunton he was unable to afford a university education and consequently acquired a job as an auditor in the pensions section of the Board of Education.

		On Friday, October 27, 2006, Clarke Road granted World War II veteran and flying ace Charley Fox an honorary High School diploma for his continuing contributions to our students.
		These contributions continued as the former spitfire pilot donated an archive of his wartime memoirs to the school to bring a sense of reality about the war to students for years to come.
		Although Fox never graduated from high school ("I got a job and then the war came along," he says.), his son, Jim, was one of Clarke Road's first graduates after the school opened 50 years ago.
