Based on the result of analyses of over 200 anatomical characters, the taxa previously assigned to the family Bagridae are recognised as constituting three families, the Bagridae, Claroteidae and Austroglanididae, which are explicitly defined by synapomorphies.
Leptoglanis and Zaireichthys are, on the basis of uniquely derived features, hypothesized as sister taxa phylogenetically close to the Amphiliidae, and are accordingly assigned to that family.
Phylogenetic taxonomy of the Bagridae, Claroteidae and Austroglanididae with new diagnoses and re-ordered taxa, at the generic levels and above, are provided.

WWF - Rift Valley Lakes - A Global Ecoregion
The Rift Valley lakes are primarily known for the extensive radiations of fish species in the family Cichlidae.
Endemic species of the Clariidae, Claroteidae, Mochokidae, Poecilidae, Mastacembelidae, Centropomidae, Cyprinidae, Clupeidae and other families are also found in these lakes.
A unique pelagic fish community has evolved in Lake Tanganyika including two endemic clupeids, Limnothrissa miodon and Stolothrissa tanganicae, that feed on zooplankton in the pelagic zone and, in turn, provide food for the four predatory centropomids, Lates angustifrons, L.

Walking catfish originated in Asia | Printer friendly version
Agnese and Teugels of the University of Montpellier studied the evolutionary relationships of clariid catfishes, which occur in Asia and Africa, by undertaking a molecular analysis of 563 nucleotides of the cytochrome b mitochondrial gene.
The material analysed included 32 different clariid catfish species across seven different genera, as well as relatives including Clarotes laticeps (a member of the family Claroteidae) and the Stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis (a member of the Heteropneustidae).
Their paper, which is due to be published in the journal Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, shows that two distinct lineages are present among the fish examined and were made up of the African fishes on one side and the Asian species on the other.

Scientists investigate catfish evolution | Printer friendly version
The Akysidae, Sisoridae and Amblycipitidae species is monophyletic and all evolved from a single ancestor.
Similarly, the Clariidae, Schilbidae, Cranoglanididae, Pangasiidae, Siluridae, Claroteidae and Bagridae (some of which are found across the globe) are all monophyletic, too.
The Cranoglanididae which come from China, and the Ictaluridae which come from North America are closely related sister groups in the evolutionary family tree for catfishes.

Page 181, an “id” should be added to “Family AUSTROGLANIDAE (154)” to give “Family AUSTROGLANIDIDAE (154)”, as given under Family CLAROTEIDAE (155), to conform with the literature (however, correctness of orthography has yet to be confirmed).
Change also needed on page 474 and 545.
Page 181, under Family CLAROTEIDAE (155), line 3, “Bargidae” should be “Bagridae”.
