Class 73 takes the combination of a class 73 measuring instrument and a circuit controller when the circuit controller is claimed broadly.
Class 340 also, in subclasses 500+ takes electrical devices permanently associated with the object or environment being monitored for giving a signal or indication of the presence or absence of a condition but wherein no quantitative measurements may be made.

Class 73, no. E6013 (73107) at Rowsley South, on the Peak Railway on 17th April 2003.
The British Rail Class 73 electro-diesel locomotives are very unusual as they are able to operate off 750 V DC third-rail electric supply, but also have a diesel engine to allow them to operate on non-electrified routes.
Eurostar own two Class 73 locomotives, which have been specially modified to be enable them to haul a Eurostar unit.

Indeed, the members of the class are clearly not the sharpest pencils in the draw, but they have also been severely dulled by misuse, abuse and poverty.
Yet, with laughter as its tool and though there are a few serious moments toward the end, Class of '73 shakes off most of its heaviness, presenting hilariously ironic scenes such as the children singing (with big smiles on their faces) that they cannot be "movitated" and are, as such, the "what lef' back".
Class of '73 handles its subject well, but is driven more by entertaining dialogue than by plot.

73 004 was one of the first locomotives in the class to be scrapped and was the only locomotive to carry this special livery, painted in NSE light blue with full yellow ends.

The Class 73 concept is pretty much unique on the UK rail network in that it is equipped with two different power sources — power collection from the former Southern Region’s 650/750v DC third rail system and also from the on-board diesel generator set.
A great advantage was that power could be changed from one to the other at speed — the diesel could be started and stopped and the pickup shoes could be switched in and out, raised and lowered — all while on the move.
The JA’s became class 73/0, and JB (of which 73129 is a member), 73/1.

The Class 73 is almost unique on British Railways today in that it is capable of being powered by two different sources - traction current picked up from the third rail and also from its on board diesel generator set (albeit at reduced power).
There was one other electro-diesel type - the class 74 - a later conversion from pure electric locomotive class 71 which was not a success and all have been withdrawn.

Before EWS took over the trainload freight operations, most of the freight operations in the 3rd Rail region of the South of England were handled by Class 73 locomotives.
After the Class 66 arrivals, the EWS mass withdrawal programme hit the Class 73 fleet hard, and in October 2002 only 3 out of the total of 16 EWS locomotives are in a serviceable state, the rest were stored around the South East.
This sub class was renumbered from standard 73/1 locomotives in the late '80s to early '90s and were dedicated to the London Victoria - Gatwick Airport 'Gatwick Express' operation.

 Preserved Diesels - Class 73
The first six, the 73/0's, were built at Eastleigh in 1962 and another forty-three, the 73/1's, were built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry between 1965 and 1967.
The class spent virtually their entire careers based on the SR working all types of train and are probably remembered best for the Gatwick Express services.
A few members of the class are still in use on the mainline with various companies.
