Classic (Mac OS X) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Classic, or Classic Environment, is a hardware and software abstraction layer in Mac OS X that allows applications compatible with Mac OS 9 to run on the OS X operating system.
Classic is not supported on versions of Mac OS X that run on Apple systems incorporating Intel microprocessors, which will include all new Apple systems by the end of 2006.
Additionally (somewhat to the surprise of end-users) Classic resurrected some older applications that had previously been unusable on the Macintosh Quadra and Power Macintosh series; this is because Mac OS X replaced Mac OS 9's virtual memory system with a more standard and less fragile implementation, and eliminated the Motorola 68040's split cache system.

The introduction of Mac OS X on March 24th, 2001 was the fulfillment of a promise made over a decade earlier--a promsise to Mac users that they would get a brand new operating system, and that it would be insanely great.
This was partially due to the sluggish performance of the OS X interface on my G3/400 (a problem in its own right), but it was also because I could not set up the OS X user interface to suit my needs the way Mac OS 9 did.
Mac OS X 10.0.x was not the OS I had hoped it would be, and yet I can see the end of the road for classic Mac OS fast approaching.

In fact, my computer at home (a Power Mac G4/400) crashed so many times this weekend (it's running Mac OS 9) that I was tempted to buy a copy of the beta to run at home.
I'm tired of the constant crashing, and thus far Mac OS X hasn't done that to me, which brings me to a pleasant observation: OS X is pretty solid, as far as I can tell.
(That is, the other OS X applications are drawn behind the Classic applications, which are frozen.) This is a true testament to the stability of OS X, considering it doesn't miss a beat.
