  Classic Rag - Definition, explanation
Classic Rag (or classical ragtime) is a term used to describe the style of ragtime composition pioneered by Scott Joplin and the Missouri school of ragtime composers.
The term "classic" was first applied to these compositions by Joplin's publisher, John Stark, as a way to distinguish them from what he considered the "common" rags of other publishers, but today the term is often used to describe a particular structural form used in ragtime composition.
The "classic rag" form can thus be considered the typical form of a ragtime piano composition, though it is by no means the only form.

To "rag" a piece of music is to take a well-known tune and change the rhythm of it to make it syncopated, or "jazzy"-sounding.
But the piano rags of Scott Joplin, and of another fl composer, James Scott, were of such high quality that they were a mainstay of the popular piano repertoire for decades.
Classic rags, particularly Joplin's "The Entertainer", became once again a part of the standard band and piano repertoire.

 Ragtime Piano, Musical Origins
These rags may belong to the "Eastern Ragtime" style or may not even be rags in the classical sense.
The term "classic ragtime" actually was coined by the publisher John Stark who in the first decade of the 20th century began publishing works by Joplin, Lamb, Scot and others and billed them as "classic rags" and compared their quality to European art songs.
As a result, classic rags are generally referred to as those published by Stark, Joplin and another composer, May Aufderheide who referred to her own Joplin inspired works as "classic" rags.

One of the more innovative techniques used in Scott rag interpretations, and one that exists in at least a couple piano rolls of the era, is to play the first two sections somewhat sedately, followed by an increase of fifteen or so metronome ticks and greater dynamics in the C and D sections.
The association of the music with the rag's title is unclear, and may have just been a name floating around in his head, although the cover was obviously done specifically for this rag.
