The Classics Department is responsible for teaching three subjects on the curriculum: Latin, Classical Greek and Classical Civilisation.
Despite their increasing rarity in the maintained sector of education, the classical languages are still highly valued as intellectual disciplines and as an unrivalled route to literacy at the highest level.
Classical Civilisation is available as an A level to all boys since knowledge of Greek and Latin is not required; ancient texts are read in translation.

Classical Civilisation is a major in the BA (General Studies).
At the discretion of the head of the discipline, students may gain credit for modules from other disciplines, but a minimum of four Classical Civilisation semester-modules (two at level 3) must be included in the major; the same module may not be taken for credit at both second and third level.
While this course forms part of the major in Classical Civilisation, it is recommended to all students who have a particular interest in language and the origin of western ideas, and it will also help students to improve their language ability.

The civilization of the ancient Greeks has been immensely influential on the language, politics, educational systems, philosophy, science, art, and architecture of the modern world, fueling the Renaissance in Western Europe and again resurgent during various neo-Classical revivals in 18th and 19th century Europe and The Americas.
