Classical music of the United Kingdom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Composed music in the UK is traceable back to at least the 13th century and has influenced the wider European development of classical music through individuals ranging from Simon Tunsted, in the fourteenth century, to Benjamin Britten, in the 20th.
Elizabeth I granted the monopoly of music publishing to Tallis and his pupil William Byrd which has ensured that their works were widely distributed and have survived in various editions, but arguably limited the potential for music publishing in Britain.
Specialist music education at establishments such as the Royal College of Music, Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Royal Northern College of Music and Guildhall School of Music provide world-class music teaching to gifted classical musicians, though the general level of classical music education in Britain is somewhat limited.

The reaction against progressive rock was swift, as the genre came to be perceived as needlessly obscure and inaccessible; a new generation of British youth hated progressive rock and the bombastic, indulgent sounds of heavy metal, disco and glam.
The 1970s saw tremendous changes in folk music as well, which saw the development of folk-rock fusions and powerful singer-songwriter traditions and the evolution of popular forms of folk-based music from the United Kingdom's Jamaican and Indian immigrant communities.
Britpop was a fusion of all the alternative rock stylings of the previous two decades, with a special focus on neo-psychedelia and it began to dominate the charts, while house techno music and its various subgenres, and the entire club culture, became increasingly mainstream.

The economy of the United States was booming, and the images on TV made it appear as though American teens were able to purchase much that the British could not.
While rock music and its country-influenced cousin, rockabilly, topped the American charts, a group of blues musicians started to become very popular in the United Kingdom in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Many of these bands have been criticized as watering-down the music of African Americans for mainstream and middle-class audiences, though they often produced R&B that was indistinguishable outside of the British accent and just as often added their own distinctive takes on R&B, such as The Yardbirds' improvised guitar "rave-ups".

A group of some of London's finest musicians, it has become one of the leading chamber orchestras and toured widely, thrilling audiences with the special combination of inspiration and virtuosity which is the feature of all their performances.
The orchestra produces an authentic and exciting sound by maintaining a string strength akin to that of the early 19th century orchestras and adopting a traditional seating arrangement; this enhances the orchestral balance and gives clarity and brilliance to the texture.
Specialising in the music of the classical period, the orchestra has been featured on BBC Radio 3 and is often heard on Classic FM under its regular conductor Jonathan Brett and leader Alison Kelly.

The proposed abolition of the Live Classical Music Subsidy is a source of grave concern to all those who are committed to the development and growth of classical music in the United Kingdom.
It is a well-established fact that classical music is unable to survive in the open market without subsidy, as is demonstrated by the support given to orchestras, opera companies and other classical music promoters throughout the country.
The Live Classical Music Subsidy has in the past provided the means to support classical composers by enhancing the fees from live performances, which form the basis of much of their income.
