"Classical" is especially troublesome since it is used by many as a way of distinguishing music from pop and rock genres, as though anything that is not "pop, rock" "folk" or "country western," etc. is "classical" music.
In music, we use classical to describe a style, and specifically to describe a period of history from approximately the last half of the eighteenth century through the first decade of the 19th Century.
The terms "classic" and "classical" came into use in the 18th and 19th centuries as Europe began to identify with antiquity, especially ancient Greece and the ideals manifest in that culture.

The Classical period saw the introduction of a form which has dominated instrumental composition to the present day: the sonata-form emerged from the rounded binary form of Baroque during this period.
Chromaticism in the Classical era: In Baroque music, chromaticism (the use of notes extraneous to the diatonic scale) was used freely for expressive effects at emotionally intense situations such as grief or lament especially in recitatives (opera, oratorio), cantata, and in instrumental program pieces.

 THE CLASSICAL PERIOD (1775-1825)
The musical scene in the classical period reflected the changes occurring in the society in which the music was being written.
Music was still being composed for the church and the court, but the advent of public concerts reflected the new view that music should be written for the enjoyment and entertainment of the common person.
Church music tended to be more conservative than secular compositions, which also helps to explain why stylistic innovations were seen most clearly in instrumental music but were less prevalent in the choral music of the period.

The high baroque music of the eighteenth century was dominated by the genius of Bach and Handel.
Later in the century, the Classic style of Haydn and Mozart dominated the music of Western Europe, with the symphony, sonata, and string quartet predominating, and the sonata principle at the core of musical structure.
The classical style may be seen to culminate in the music of Beethoven, who is perceived as the link between the classic and romantic style.

Later in the period and spanning the turn of the century, Viennese composer Franz Schubert further developed the symphony and string quartet in his own style, operating as he was under the shadow of the great Beethoven.
A musical theorist as well as a composer, by 1761 Gluck had come to the conclusion that the important elements in ballet and opera should be the story and the feelings of the characters, not the ridiculous intrigues, mistaken identities, and myriad sub-plots that had become the stock-in-trade of the Baroque opera.
Although his style of music was coming to an end and his ideals were just gaining a foothold at the time of his death, Gluck's operatic reforms did have a far-reaching impact on future composers, affecting the stage works of Mozart, Berlioz, and Wagner.

Musical scholar Joseph Kerman explains that "musicians can point with pride to this galaxy of great composers and compare the accomplishments of Viennese music with those of other such rich cultural flowerings at other times and other places: art in Renaissance Florence and Venice, for example, or literature in Elizabethan England" (145).
Musical critic E.T.A. Hoffmann has also written of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven developing a new art, with origins first appearing in the middle of the 18th century (Rosen 19).
Chamber music was intended for the small setting of a salon or chamber and consists of a small group of players who perform as a team (such as the string quartet with two violins, viola, and cello).

Like many music lovers, music of the romantic era was the first stop with its glorious melodies, nationalism, personal feelings of the composer, and the large orchestras.

Term which, with its related forms such as 'classic' and 'classicism', has been applied to a variety of music from different cultures and is taken to mean any that does not belong to folk or popular traditions; it is also applied to any collection of music regarded as a model of excellence or formal discipline.
It is no coincidence that this period was one of keen interest in classical antiquity; most of Gluck's 'reform' operas, composed at the beginning of this period, are based on classical subjects.
In music it is more often applied to the early 20th-century movement, led by Stravinsky, which revived the balanced forms and clearly perceptible thematic processes of earlier styles to replace what seemed the increasingly exaggerated gestures and the formlessness of late Romanticism.

Whereas in polyphonic music harmony was produced by carefully designing musical themes so that when layered over each other they would produce pleasing sounds; in homophonic music one can write a much wider variety of melodies and add chords underneath, where they are wanted, without trying compose those chords themselves out of independently valid melodies.
