Thus, Florida's Classics became the Classics IV, and for all of that trouble, their debut record fizzled at number 103 on the charts.
Suddenly there was a serious future in the offing for the Classics IV -- but not for Cobb as a member, nor for Yost as a drummer.
Dennis Yost and the Classics IV shifted to MGM Records in 1972 and lasted through one album and a last pop hit, with "What Am I Crying For," along with a string of attempts through 1975.

Cinema usher Dennis Yost (from Jacksonville) added on vocals; "Soul Train' co-written by Cobb and Buddy Buie was too obvious a follow-up, a minor hit; "Stormy' '68 reached no 5 and "Traces' '69 was third and last million-seller.
"Everyday With You Girl' made top 20 '69; subsequent outings billed as Dennis Yost & The Classics IV; switched from Imperial to MGM for "What Am I Crying For?' '72, their last top 40 entry; personnel changes were almost complete.
By the time of a compilation album on UA '75, Cobb and Buie involved by then with the Atlanta Rhythm Section, who revived "Spooky' '79.

The Classics IV The Classics IV came from Florida with a unique sound in the late 60's and early 70's, a sound that helped to send pop music in a somewhat different direction.
In late 1968 and early 1969, the Classics IV featuring Dennis Yost recorded two songs that became million sellers and would be the group's final top ten entries, Stormy and Traces.
The sound of the Classics IV is credited by some rock historians with launching the thrust of "Southern Boogie" in the 70's.

Like David Gate's 'Bread', Classics IV comprised of some of the best, and most in demand session musicians of their day (the Sixties).
Santana had a major hit with a remake of 'Stormy', and Atlanta Rhythm Section (that was formed by Cobb, Dean Doughtry and Buie after the demise of the Classics IV) had a major hit with a remake of 'Spooky'.
One last thing: I've never found an album, or a web-site that has ever named the saxophone player for the Classics IV; well his name is Sam Anderson.

 The Classics IV
The seeds of what was to become The Classics IV were sewn in Jacksonville, Florida in the early 1960s when a young drummer named Dennis Yost joined some highschool classmates in a band called "The Echoes".
The band started to attract attention, not only for their soulful sound, but Dennis was one of the few drummers to play while standing up and also singing lead.
Touring with the hottest acts of the day, Dennis Yost and The Classics IV scored two more hits in late 1969, a number 12 hit called "Every Day With You Girl" and "Change Of Heart" which reached number 25.

The Classics IV [+] were actually a quintet comprised of several top studio musicians: lead vocalist Dennis Yost [+], guitarist/songwriter James Cobb [+], guitarist Wally Eaton [+], bassist Joe Wilson [+], and drummer Kim Venable [+].
Lowery was instrumental in getting Classics IV [+] a record deal upon their 1967 move from Jacksonville to Atlanta, and the group's commercially viable brand of soft rock produced three Top Five hits in "Spooky," "Stormy," and "Traces." All of the group's hits were written by Cobb and producer Buddy Buie [+].
Yost was eventually billed ahead of the group in an attempt to make him a recognizable star, but the move failed to ignite much interest, and Cobb left the group in 1970 to form the Atlanta Rhythm Section with Buie and Wilson's replacement, Dean Daughtry [+].

His father, Franz Strauss, was perhaps the greatest horn player of his day, but a deeply conservative musician who wanted his son to compose in the solid classical style of Mendelssohn and Brahms.
Beyond the boy's prodigious talent, it was perhaps this conservative streak in his early music that appealed so much to the renowned conductor and Brahms supporter Hans von Blow, who took the young Strauss under his wing in the early 1880s.

The truth about the CLASSICS IV
We think of them as a soft rock band, but some of the same songs they cut are considered beach and/or Northern soul classics by other artists who don't have that top 40 baggage associated with them.
The best pre-Classics IV record is probably Dennis Yost's first: Ace 657 THE ECHOES - House Warming/Restless (both sides RandB instrumentals with prominent sax) Dennis Yost was the drummer.
There is video in existence of the '66 version of the band (as simply The Classics) doing their regional hit "Polyanna" on "Where The Action Is".

Although a couple of its members went on to much better things with the Atlanta Rhythm Section, most of Classics IV's late 60's music falls squarely into the "not really worth the effort" drawer.
This collection was compiled long after Classics IV broke up, and has their hits from 1969-70 ("Midnight" "The Funniest Thing" "Where Did All The Good Times Go") and a title cut from one of their albums ("Mama's And Papa's").
Sometimes album cuts are better than songs that get released, and I feel with Classics IV, that was the case.
