William Wilson Morgan, January 3, 1906—June 21, 1994 By Donald E. Osterbrock Biographical Memoirs
He was one of the leading experts in the world in the classification of stellar spectra, integrated spectra of clusters and galaxies, and the forms of galaxies.
Morgan was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1956, and was awarded the Bruce Medal of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in 1958, the Henry Norris Russell Lectureship of the American Astronomical Society in 1961, and the Henry Draper Medal of the NAS in 1980.
He rejected much of the Hubble classification system, arguing convincingly that the objects the great observational cosmologist called S0 were in fact a mixture of galaxies with dissimilar forms and that his Sa, Sb, Sc sequence was based on two criteria that were often in disagreement.

Later Morgan and Keenan were honored by a workshop on spectral classification, dedicated to them, at the University of Toronto, and by another held under the auspices of the Vatican Observatory in Tucson in 1993, the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of the MKK Spectral Atlas.
Morgan's work on the classification of the forms of galaxies, based largely on close inspection of direct photographs in the Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories plate files, was one of his most important contributions to galaxy research.

 Carl Linnaeus
Founded a few years after Linnaeus's death, the Linnaean Society of London is still going strong as an international society for the study of natural history.
His ideas on classification have influenced generations of biologists during and after his own lifetime, even those opposed to the philosophical and theological roots of his work.
The sexual basis of Linnaeus's plant classification was controversial in its day; although easy to learn and use, it clearly did not give good results in many cases.

Howard presented a paper to the Askesian Society titled ``On the Modification of Clouds'' which described three basic categories or families of clouds.
Most of the credit goes to an English chemist and pharmacist named Luke Howard who devised a classification system in 1802 that is still in use.
He used Latin root words to describe them, following the 18th-century methodology of Carl von Linne, who gave us the Latin-based classification systems for plants and animals.

Hunt Institute: Strandell Collection of Linnaeana
Linnaeus, a born classifier, devised a comprehensive system of classification for all animals, plants, and minerals, which he published in 1735 as Systema Naturae.
In fact, Linnaeus' lasting fame rests not on his classification itself but on his contributions in nomenclature and description, and on his having provided a comprehensive and effective information system for burgeoning knowledge about the world's biota.
The University Libraries at Kansas State University, in Manhattan, Kansas, hold the Mackenzie Linnaeana collection, formerly at the New York Horticultural Society, which consists of books and dissertations.

Using the Federal Geographic Data Committee's Vegetation Classification Standard at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
A project to demonstrate the usefulness of The Nature Conservancy's vegetation classification system (which was initially modified from UNESCO's system and then further developed in cooperation with the Ecological Society of America, GAP Analysis, academics, researchers, etc.) was initially proposed a few years back.
Current vegetation mapping efforts use a combined system of Society of American Foresters (forest types), National Wetland Inventory (wetland types), Anderson (open and developed land types), or GAP/TNC (coarse terrestrial vegetation types).
In the meantime, the Federal Geographic Data Committee vegetation subcommittee was prompted to revamp the then-current draft vegetation standard to more closely align with TNC's efforts.

 Index via Historical Classification Systems
Not shown in the Royal Society Scheme are the classifications of topics in applied mathematics, such as mechanics.
The first is the system used in the "Catalogue of Scientific Papers 1800-1900" published by the Royal Society of London in 1908; they continued using this classification system for another decade or so as Schedule A (Pure Mathematics) of the International Catalogue of Scientific Literature.
However, traces of these systems can be seen in the Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC) scheme developed several decades later and, with modifications, still used to classify current publications.

New Zealand bans video game - Scot's Newsletter Forums
In this case, the government of New Zealand is doing that job, purportedly for the betterment of their society.
In a 12-page statement issued Friday, New Zealand's Office of Film and Literature Classification said the game "Manhunt" depicts horror, cruelty, crime and violence in such a manner that its availability was likely to hurt the public good.
And my contention is that just because someone has reached the age of consent, doesn't necessarily mean that they have developed the insight or experience to be able to fully understand the implications of, or even discern the difference between, what might be good for society and what might not.

Group Classification on National ID Cards - Jim Fussell - 15 Nov 2001
Such classification schemes treat group difference in overly simplified ways treating group identity as an unchanging constant not subject to ongoing changes in society.
Group classification on ID cards or other official personal documents (passports, residence permits, etc.) force a person to be affiliated with a governmentally-defined group and expose persons to profiling and human rights abuses based upon their group identity.
Classifications on ID cards are instead a facilitating factor, making it more possible for governments, local authorities or non-state actors such as militias to more readily engage in violations based on ethnicity or religion.

This, coupled with the recognition of the importance of systematic biology research to biodiversity conservation, means that as it moves into its third century, the Linnean Society continues to play a central role as the urgency and magnitude of the task of documenting the world’s flora and fauna is recognised.
And whilst we remain proud of our heritage, today more than ever the Society is an important contemporary organisation encouraging debate, research, publications, meetings as well as maintaining internationally important historical collections in the biological sciences.
Our library, for example, is composed of some 40,000 monographs dating from 1483 to the present, focusing on plant and animal identification and classification, evolutionary biology and the history of natural history.

In overall morphology Lioscincus tillieri and Lioscincus maruia are very similar in body proportions (long-limbed and long-tailed), habits and habitats (surface active species inhabiting maquis shrubland), and in certain aspects of scalation (keeled body scales), osteology (58 or more postsacral vertebrae), and colouration (yellow flush to the ventral surface).
