A classification yard or marshalling yard (including hump yards) is a railroad yard found at some freight train stations, used to separate railroad cars on to one of several tracks.
In Argentina all classification yards with the exception of Villa Maria are flat yards, though some of them have approx.
Most hump yards are single yards with one classification bowl but some, mostly very large, hump yards have two of them, one for each direction, thus are double yards, such as Maschen, Clearing, and Bailey yards.

The yard switcher should always be able get to any track in one forward move, and to escape back to the lead from almost anywhere in the yard in one reverse move.
Remember that the purpose of a classification yard is to collect incoming railcars, rearrange them and get them on trains that will take them to their destinations.
The second compromise is to have both mains pass on the same side of the yard, with a pair of crossovers from the far main to the near main at either end, which allow trains on the far main to cross the near main and move into the A/D track(s).

Prototype flat (non-hump) classification yards are not typically operated in this fashion.
Obviously, this yard is a little too full, but since we won't be getting any inbounds that situation will improve as we start to make our moves.
My experience of watching many different operators of varying degrees of experience switch the same model yard suggests that experience and exposure play some role in how operators approach the task, but there is probably also some component of individual differences in the way we each see and categorize the world.

The Oelwein yard was the hub of the entire CGW system, giving Oelwein its nickname of "Hub City".
The preserved Chicago Great Western yard tower and office are at the corner of the business district in Oelwein, and are located at the northwest entrance to the yard.
