Classism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Classism (a term formed by analogy with racism) is any form of prejudice or oppression against people who are in, or who are perceived as being like those who are in, a lower social class (especially in the form of lower or higher socioeconomic status) within a class based society.
Classism is also similar to racism in that it is often a matter of considerable controversy.
People who generally tend to find charges of classism unfounded or unreasonably harsh often diagnose the charges as expressions of class envy.

Classism Theory is the fundamental study of classism ideology, basic concepts, society structure, and behavior patterns.
The class structure bases its foundation on the theory that all organisms are classified into categories from the moment of birth.
Classism Theory also deals with the style of warfare employed by all the classes in their battles and the progressions that these wars have brought to society by closely examining these factors in a scientific manner.

In a classist society, there is a necessary clash at all times between the upper classes, who want to maintain their affluent status, and the lower classes, who want to move up to a higher class.
The more established a class system is in society, the ability to act against emergencies and change decreases, and chances increase that the discontent of the lower class lead to a revolution.

Classism is different because class is, by definition, stratification.
There's no perception that I'm aware of that classism is about "hate" or "prejudice"—that "reverse classism" or the hatred of the upper classes by those lower in society is "the same" or "just as bad" as classism.
I was under the impression that classism specifically referred to prejudice based on class ("poor people are lazy"), rather than the stratification itself.

We need to examine classism in a fearless, open-minded way in order to first develop a clear understanding of how it is surfaced in our own organizations, and what the effects are on our own employees as well as our patients and customers, their families, and the communities we serve.

That classism is dangerous not because those of us who are categorized as less elite may be slighted at conferences or by journals or seminar leaders.
It is dangerous because it divides us -- faculty members and students alike -- at a moment when financing for higher education is eroding, when grants for professional development and research are shrinking, when even the largest and most prestigious universities are still cutting faculty positions.

I used the more general term "classism" to refer to situations in which either libraries or other bodies, or librarians as individuals, engaged in discriminatory behavior which was assumed by the author of an article to be based on class or social status.
The phrase "institutional classism" (coined by Sanford Berman) is connected to the ways in which public libraries as institutions tend to create policies, procedures, and operational plans that disregard the needs of poor people (2000, 6).
(The charging of fees or fines is a good example of a type of library policy that is necessarily hostile towards those of limited means.) Although the term "institutional classism" is recent, the idea is not, and many authors allude to it, including Golightly in his 1970 article.
