  Clatsop County History
The county currently occupies an area of 873 square miles and is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by the Columbia River, on the east by Columbia County, and on the south by Tillamook County.
The first county government was organized in the mid-1840s with the election of justices of the peace, clerk, sheriff, assessor, treasurer, and the formation of district courts and the county board of commissioners.
The voters of Clatsop County approved a home rule charter in 1988, which called for a board of county commissioners as the policy determining body of the county, and a county administrative officer.

The county was named for the Clatsop tribe of Native Americans, who lived along the coast of the Pacific Ocean prior to European settlement.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 26.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who were 65 years of age or older.
Clatsop County was created from the northern and western portions of the original Twality District on June 22, 1844.

The Clatsop are a small tribe of Chinookan-speaking Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
The Clatsop dialect used by the tribe is a nearly-extinct dialect of the Lower Chinookan language, a language in the Oregon Penutian family.
The tribe was encountered at the mouth of the Columbia in 1805 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Jeremiah had preceeded the family to Oregon in the Jesse A. Applegate Oregon Trail wagon train of 1843 and by 1845 had established the town of Lexington on his land claim in Clatsop.
When the wagon trains reached the turn-off for Oregon there were several split-offs from the trains and a group, whose captain could have been John Robinson, was one that went to Oregon.
We reach Oregon City the sixth day from camp, but when I saw a woman on a very poor horse with a little child in her lap and one strapped on behind her and two or three tied on another horse, I felt very very thankful and imagined I was only having a picnic.

 Clatsop County Climate
Stretching along Oregon's Pacific border, the coastal zone is characterized by wet winters, relatively dry summers, and mild temperatures throughout the year.
As is typical of western Oregon, the highest monthly precipitation values for the coast occur in the winter months of November, December, and January.
Clatsop County was created from the original Tuality District in 1844 and named for the Clatsop Indians, one of the many Chinook tribes living in Oregon.

 Skipanon
The Skipanon River Watershed is located in the extreme northwest corner of Clatsop County in Oregon.
For many years citizens of Warrenton and the Clatsop Plains voiced their concerns about the declines in water quality, salmon runs and recreational opportunities caused by flood control structures on the Skipanon River.
In 1996 a 1 square foot hole was cut in a tidegate at the 8th Street Dam by the Skipanon WCD to allow for minimal flow and fish passage.
