	Fort Clatsop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Fort Clatsop was the encampment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the Oregon Country near the mouth of the Columbia River during the winter of 1805 - 1806.
		Located along the Lewis and Clark River at the north end of the Clatsop Plains approximately 5 mi (8 km) southwest of Astoria, Oregon, the fort was the last encampment of the Corps of Discovery before embarking on their return trip east to St.
		Whereas the previous winter on the Great Plains they spent a great amount of time interacting with the local Native Americans, at Fort Clatsop their interaction with the local Clatsop was not social and was limited mostly to small-scale trading.

	Clatsop Plains - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The Clatsop Plains are an area of wetlands and sand dunes between the Coast Range and Pacific Ocean in northwestern Oregon in the United States.
		The plains are drained by several coastal rivers include the Skipanon River and Lewis and Clark River, which flow parallel to the coast and empty into the Columbia at Youngs Bay near Astoria.
		The plains are named for the Clatsop tribe of Native Americans who lived in the area at the time of the arrival of Europeans at turn of the 19th century.

	Territorial Guide - Clatsop County Records
		Clatsop County was named for the Clatsop Indians, one of many Chinook tribes living in Oregon.
		As Astoria grew, activities gradually shifted to that city and petitions to the county court were granted establishing Astoria as the "place of holding elections." However, it was not until 1854 that the legislative assembly provided for a vote to decide the location of the county seat.
		Series consists of a petition to the Clatsop County Probate Court signed by twenty-eight petitioners for the establishment of a voting precinct in Astoria and the appointment of election judges.

	THE DUNE RIDGES OF CLATSOP COUNTY
		The Clatsop Co. dunes occur in an area that is locally referred to as the Clatsop Plains.
		Therefore the map legend for the Clatsop Plains reflects the additional la, 1b, and 1c ridge sequence even though the time frame of these small ridges are all included in the ridge labeled 1, in the Clatsop Plains.
		The wide 3c and 3d bench dunes occur primarily in the central part of the Clatsop Plains in the Camp Rilea area, and may partially own their origin to modern dune filling as shown in ( Figure 4) and human filling in of the area between the dune ridges to create flat ground.

	Court History
		Clatsop County had been carved out of the Northwest portion of Tuality District, which had contained all of the country south of the northern boundary line of the United States, west of the Willamette, north of the Yamhill River and east of the Pacific Ocean.

		In August, 1840, Frost and Solomon H. Smith, an early settler, built homes for their families at Clatsop plains about five miles south of the Columbia river, as well as a mission house just north of their little settlement.

		On 22 June 1866 the Acting Assistant Quartermaster for Fort Stevens recommended to the Quartermaster General that a cemetery be prepared in case someone should die.

		Coboway, who was often referred to by members of the Corps of Discovery as Comowool, was considered the first chief of the Clatsop Indians, a tribe of approximately 400 who inhabited the northwest tip of present-day Oregon.
