Edinburgh Architecture Research 26: Claude Bragdon in Context
Bragdon was convinced that the application in architecture of mathematica€l systems derived from nature would not only echo the divine structure of the universe but would instil in the building a beauty comparable with buildings of the ancient world.
Bragdon's point of departure however is his inclusion of architecture with music (as opposed to solely music in Schopenhauer's philosophies) as the arts which do not merely manifest the Ideas, that is the objectifications, of the Will but directly express the Will.
Though Bragdon's system of originating architectural ornament from the fourth dimensi€on was far removed from the geometric sources of European contemporaries, in the theoretical underpinning of their systems Bragdon and his European counterparts shared a common thread.
