Having first studied painting in Dijon, in 1760 he became Noël Hallé’s pupil in Paris, but, needing to earn a living, by 1762 he had changed to a career as an illustrator.
Like Charles Eisen, whose associate he became, he devoted himself mainly to illustrating the amorous poetry of such writers as François-Thomas de Baculard d’Arnaud (Anecdotes et nouvelles, 1767–75, later published as a collection in Epreuves du sentiment, Paris, 1775) and Claude-Joseph Dorat (notably the Oeuvres complètes, Amsterdam, 1772–3).
A contract that he signed with the publisher Defer de Maisonneuve shows that Marillier was to be paid 4000 livres for these 300 drawings.
