Claude-Joseph Vernet - Storm on the Mediterranean coast & Mediterranean port, calm weather   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Vernet was most famous in his day for his coastal scenes, which are evocative of the Mediterranean coastline between Livorno, Rome and Naples and their environs.
The technique used in these two paintings is typical of Vernet’s early work — very fine canvas, thinly applied paint, and a high amount of glazing — which enabled Vernet to express a variety of weather conditions: the wind on the broken sea, the fog, and the calm milky sky of early mornings.
Vernet excels in Storm on the Mediterranean Coast when painting the sky, using almost pure yellow for the forked lightening and depicting menacing clouds from which rain falls and through which beams of light illuminate the wings of the seagulls.

 Biography
From 1733 to 1753 he worked in Rome, where he was influenced by the light and atmosphere of Claude and also by the more wild and dramatic art of Salvator Rosa.
Vernet was particularly celebrated for his paintings of the sea-shore and ports, and on returning to Paris in 1753 he was commissioned by Louis XV to paint a series of the sea-ports of France.
Vernet belonged to a family of French painters of which two other members attained distinction: his son Antoine-Charles-Horace Vernet (1758-1836) known as 'Carle', and his grandson Émile-Jean-Horace Vernet (1789-1863) known as Horace Vernet.

Vernet, a native of Avignon, went to Rome in 1734 and over the next decade established himself in Italy as a painter of real and imaginary landscapes based on the local countryside and seacoast.
In this painting, the artist depicts an idealized Mediterranean seaport, rather than a specific location, and uses a variety of features from the region.
The large warship is firing a salute and the nearby ships fly the Dutch flag, indicating that the painting may have been commissioned by a Dutch client.

artnet.com: Resource Library: Vernet: (1) Joseph Vernet   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Vernet probably received his first lessons in painting from his father, Antoine, who then encouraged him to move to the studio of Philippe Sauvan (1697–1792), the leading master in Avignon.
In 1731 Vernet independently produced a suite of decorative overdoors for the hôtel of the Marquise de Simiane at Aix-en-Provence; at least two of these survive (in situ) and are Vernet’s earliest datable landscapes.
These are early indications of his favoured type of subject, and Vernet would have studied works attributed to such 17th-century masters as Claude Lorrain, Gaspard Dughet and Salvator Rosa in private collections at Aix and Avignon.
