Monteux has served on the faculties of the New England Conservatory of Music, the Peabody Conservatory, Vassar College and Ohio State University.
In 1959, Claude Monteux, the son of renowned conductor, Pierre Monteux, elevated the beginnings of the (Hudson Valley Philharmonic) orchestra to a fully professional ensemble and renamed it the Hudson Valley Philharmonic Society, Inc. It became a regional orchestra serving Ulster, Orange, Rockland, Columbia and Dutchess counties.

In 1911 Monteux was appointed principal conductor of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and conducted the premieres of Stravinsky’s Petrushka, Le Sacre du printemps, and Le Rossignol; he also conducted the premiere of Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé (recently reissued in Decca Originals on 475 7525).
In 1961 Monteux was appointed chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra.
Monteux was ill several times during the last few years of his life but persevered with this conducting.
