Suddenly Claudia abandoned all caution, put her head down and sprinted like mad for 10 meters to swim into second place (2:47.6) splitting the mighty Russian pair Prozumenschikova (2:46.4) and Babanina (2:48.6).
At the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnepeg she won the 200m butterfly, was second in the 200m breaststroke and set world records in both the 200m and 400m individual medleys.
Claudia won 25 U.S. National AAU Championships and set 23 world records during her remarkable 6-year career.

Claudia Kolb (Thomas), a graduate of Santa Clara High School, swam for the Santa Clara Swim Club from age eight through her Olympic career.
At fourteen, Kolb became the first American woman swimmer to win an Olympic medal in the breaststroke, winning the silver in the 200-meters in the 1964 Games in Tokyo.
Kolb's signature event, however, was the individual medley, in which she set several world records and won eight of her dozen national championships.

Miss Kolb set a world record in the 200 meter individual medley 2:27.8 and her clocking of 5:15.5 for the 400 meter individual medley, the second fastest ever, was just six tenths slower than the world record of Donna DeVarona set in 1964 (5:14.9).
Miss Kolb climaxed her year with a win in the 800 meter freestyle, 400 meter freestyle, 400 meter individual medley, 200 meter individual medley, and a second in the 200 meter butterfly as well as swimming on the winning medley relays and freestyle at the 1966 "Little Olympics" at Mexico.
Miss Kolb, a junior at Santa Clara High School, will be 17 in December, is 5'7" weighs only 127 lbs., shows that she will be a gold medal contender in almost any event she enters in the 1968 Olympics.
