Germany's Claudia Pechstein again demonstrated the virtues of consistency as she posted a remarkably even set of lap times to set a new world record of 6:46.91 in the women's 5000 meters, the concluding long track speedskating event of the Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games.
Pechstein's win in the 3000 came on a steady performance in which she avoided the late-lap blow-out that afflicted many other skaters and much of the simple slippage of lap times that comes late in the race.
Pechstein's time was five and a half seconds faster than the old world mark set by her compatriot Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann a year ago during the world single distances championships, but it was not actually the first time the world record was broken this afternoon.
