But as these surnames did not mark distinct families, an account of all the patrician Claudii is given under claudius, with the exception of those with the cognomen nero, since they are better known under the latter name.
The surnames of the plebeian Claudii are asellus, canina, centumalus, cicero, fla-ment, and marcellus, of which the last is by far the most celebrated.
The patrician Claudii were noted for their pride and arrogance, and intense hatred of the com monalty.

The by-form Clodius, in its origin a mere orthographical variant, was regularly used for certain Claudii in late republican times, but otherwise the two forms were used indifferently.
The gens contained a patrician and a plebeian family; the chief representatives of the former were the Pulchri, of the latter the Marcelli (see MARcELLUS).
A full account of all the Claudii will be found in Pauly-Wissowas Realencyclopadie der classischen Alteutums, idssenschaft, iii.

The Claudii   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
There are on record many distinguished services of the Claudii to their country, as well as many deeds of the opposite character.
It is notorious besides that all the Claudii were aristocrats and staunch upholders of the prestige and influence of the patricians, with the sole exception of Publius Clodius, who for the sake of driving Cicero from the city had himself adopted by a plebeian [60 B.C.] and one too who was younger than himself.
Their attitude towards the commons was so headstrong and stubborn that not even when on trial for his life before the people did any one of them deign to put on mourning or beg for mercy; and some of them during bickerings and disputes struck the tribunes of the commons.

The patrician family of the Claudii (for there was a plebeian family of the same name, no way inferior to the other either in power or dignity) came originally from Regilli, a town of the Sabines.
They likewise received from the state, lands beyond the Anio for their followers, and a burying-place for themselves near the capitol [284].
It appears from record, that many of the Claudii have performed signal services to the state, as well as committed acts of delinquency.

Velleius Paterculus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Velleius Paterculus' Roman history -in fact a brief compendium and not a full-scale study of the past- is the most important source for the story of his life and family.
The Velleii belonged to the Roman equestrian order (the second level of the Roman aristocracy, after the senators), came from Capua in Campania, and had allied itself to the powerful aristocratic clan of the Claudii Nerones.
Caius Velleius' son Velleius remained on friendly terms with both the Claudii Drusi and Octavian, who became emperor in 27 and was from then on called Augustus.

Before the editio princeps was published, a number of Latin translations appeared (from 1484) such as: Quadripartitum judiciorum opus Claudii Ptolemei Pheludiensis ab Joãne Sieurro brittuliano Bellovacesi pbelle recognitum.
All these translations, where the technical terms are effected by Arabic, are even more incorrect and more obscure than the original text, and I leave to others the trouble of comparing them with each other and with the text.

The text was translated by Wilibald PIRCKHEIMER, using the notes of Johannes REGIOMONTANUS, perhaps under the editorship of Johann HUTTICH; the ornamental woodblock designs on the reverse of the maps are attributed to Albrecht DURER, who also contributed the woodblock of the armillary sphere.
The text was newly edited by SERVETUS from Wilibald PIRCKHEIMER's text, used in the previous edition; the woodblock designs on the reverse of the maps are said to be the work of Hans HOLBEIN the Younger and GRAF.
