German arranger/conductor/composer Claus Ogerman (born 1930 in Prussia, the part that is now Poland) has been widely-admired for five decades for his large orchestra arrangements of often brooding unison strings.
Ogerman's piano-playing, which included early work with Chet Baker, can be heard to great affect on Jobim's best album "Terra Brasilis" (1980), featuring his masterful reworking of his arrangements from Jobim's 1960's American albums, highlighted by "Double Rainbow".
Until the 1970's, Ogerman's intricate large-scale orchestrations were almost always reduced to backing other artists of widely-varying talents and types of music at a time when only hit-composing arrangers (with more marketing-friendly names) could cost-effectively record their own albums in a country lacking subsidized light music orchestras and productions.

Ogerman's arrangements of Jobim's "Look to the Sky" and "Antigua" were my favorites on that album.
Claus Ogerman was a singer and pianist with Kurt Edelhagen's Big Band (exact year(s) for this have not yet been determined, but it is thought to be before Ogerman joined Max Greger's Band).
Ogerman also arranged a version of Scriabin's "Prelude" for Edelhagen, which was recorded in 1967.

Get Ready to ROCK! Review of CD album by ex-Focus guitarist Jan Akkerman called Aranjuez with string arrangements by ...
With his erstwhile musical partner Thijs van Leer enjoying continued success with the 'Introspection' series of albums, Akkerman took up his Les Paul and produced his own classical opus in 1978.
Several years earlier, Akkerman's 'Tabernakel' had shown that there was more to the Dutch guitarist than speed and flashy fretting.
Now, with orchestrations by Claus Ogerman fresh from his million-selling album collaboration with George Benson, Akkerman fashioned an interesting mix of subdued electric guitar and strings.

Claus Ogerman Vs. Tom Jobim - Jazz Bulletin Board
I am not all that familiar with Ogerman's work apart from his Jobim associations (mainly the Sinatra album) -- but I do know he is considered a world class arranger and very versatile with various styles of music.
I did find an interesting aside while googling Ogerman: the great Brazilian singer/guitarist Joyce (and now one of my favorites, thanks to recommendations from clave) moved to NYC in 1977 specifically to work on a project with Ogerman...
However Jobim hired Ogerman to do what he does best..which is to flesh out the orchestral voicings and no doubt along the way, add a few harmonic tricks of his own.

Claus had studied classical piano after graduating from the gymnasium in Nurnemburg and had found work with Kurt Edelhagen's then pioneering German jazz band.
Following his work with Edelhagen, he joined "rival" bandleader Max Greger, remaining with him for five years, during which time he did some arrangements as well as composing scores for 14 German films.
By the end of the 1960's, Ogerman was concentrating more on his own compositions and recordings, but did continue with some commerical work.

long with Lalo Schifrin, Ogerman created some of the fruggin'-best arrangements of the "now sound." His two mid-60s instrumental albums for RCA--Watusi Trumpets and Saxes Mexicano--are well worth looking for, as are his arrangements for Cal Tjader's "Soul Sauce"-era albums on Verve.

Antonio Carlos Jobim Discography: Slipcue.com Brazilian Music Guide
Claus Ogerman's arrangements are no match for Nelson Riddle's, and Jobim's Sinatra-esque vocals are kind of on the stiff side.
Jazz arranger Claus Ogerman brings an impressive modernism to bear on this album, with some truly tweaky, challenging string arrangements.
Claus Ogerman's string arrangements are slushy and florid; the last half of the record sounds more like a John Williams score than a bossa-pop album.

Ogerman had written charts for Jobim, Frank Sinatra, George Benson and so on, but was about to abandon his lightweight studio life for "serious" music.
Brecker, a star jazz sideman, was the soloist at the top of every pop producer's list, with the Brecker Bros' skunk-funk a distant memory.
Ogerman's strings and reeds shimmer with complex pleasure.

Claus Ogerman Orchestra: Watusi Trumpets   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-29)
While many are most likely aware of arranger Claus Ogerman through his work on such sublime classics as Antonio Carlos Jobim’s Wave, Bill Evans With Symphony Orchestra, and possibly his own late ‘70s/early ‘80s albums Gate of Dreams and Cityscape, fewer still have probably seen or heard Watusi Trumpets.
Cut in 1965 for RCA Victor, Ogerman is heard just a few years shy of hooking up with producer Creed Taylor who would keep him busy over the next decade arranging a variety of projects for Verve and CTI Records.
Standing apart from even his other commercially-oriented RCA sets, Ogerman’s Watusi Trumpets is certainly an oddity and a one-off affair that offers little in the way of jazz improvisation but much in the way of ‘60s high fidelity, not to mention its appeal to those who dig “Space Age Pop” or “Bachelor Pad” music.

Like many of Antonio Carlos Jobim's '70s albums, 1976's URUBU was arranged by Claus Ogerman, an associate of Jobim's longtime producer Creed Taylor whose occasionally over the top orchestrations often split the ranks of Jobim's fans.
Make no mistake, URUBU is definitely one of Jobim's most orchestrated album; Ogerman really goes nuts on a few of these tracks.
Jobim seems to be writing for a full orchestra here, or at least for more than a small bossa nova combo, and Ogerman's romantic flourishes actually help push the songs forward.

Antonio Carlos Jobim fans are very much split on the topic of arranger Claus Ogerman.
They tend to either love the albums Ogerman did with Jobim--TIDE and WAVE are the best-known--or dismiss them outright as over-orchestrated near-easy-listening tripe.
None of these are the definitive versions of these songs--even tracks Ogerman had previously arranged, like 1967's "Wave," sound a bit denser now--but fans of Ogerman's sometimes over the top arranging style will find much to enjoy here.
