Clawhammer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In any clawhammer style, the hand should assume a claw-like shape and the strumming finger should be kept fairly stiff, striking the strings by the motion of the hand at the wrist, rather than a flicking motion by the finger.
A common characteristic of clawhammer patterns is the thumb usually does not pick on the downbeat, as one might in typical fingerpicking patterns for guitar.
Another usage of "clawhammer" in guitar circles refers to a style in which the pinky finger or the pinky and ring fingers are used to brace the hand and the index finger, middle finger, and thumb are used to pluck the strings.

 Clawhammer
As a clawhammer banjo player, one of the first things I noticed when I picked up a ukulele was that I was able to play it clawhammer style.
Unlike standard fingerpicking in which you move your fingers to pluck the notes, in clawhammer you hold your hand partially closed and the only movement is in your wrist, much the same motion as knocking on a door.
This is derived from the rhythm of the ukulele, with each measure sounding like "bum-ditty bum-ditty" or, when counted, ", , , ," with the first and third beats of the measure being quarter notes and the second and fourth beats each being a two-part strum consisting of two eighth notes.

 Frailing vs Clawhammer
One frequently asked question about the 5-string banjo concerns the differences between "frailing" and "clawhammer." This is not easily resolved, simply because it would appear to be largely a matter of opinion.
This is called a number of things, including "double-thumb frailing," "drop-thumb," and "clawhammer." It is here that we get into trouble, for some people argue that that it's "frailing" if you don't "double-thumb," and "clawhammer" if you do.
So what is the difference between "frailing" and "clawhammer?" Depending on your point of view, there either is none, or "clawhammer" describes a "double-thumb" technique while "frailing" precludes it unless otherwise noted.

The truth is that in old-time music you can find people playing both open-backed banjos and (the other common modern day example of the instrument) banjos with resonators, but generally speaking I'd say that clawhammer technique is on an old-time banjo, by which I mean an open-backed banjo.
"The usual definition of clawhammer banjo is related to the number of upstroke and downstrokes with the thumb on the drum string so you end up with this syncopated, rhythmic effect with the drum string and the downbeats being played with the brush or being hit with the finger.

Teaching in outdoor settings (among the rocks and bugs), Diller demonstrates the importance of rhythm above all: rhythm in this down-picking clawhammer style also called frailing, thumping, knocking, rapping, etc. His aim is to acquaint the student with a rhythmic technique that will lend itself to a broad variety of traditional banjo music.
Rhythm learned incorrectly will become a limiting factor to the point that everything will have to be unlearned and relearned in order to advance in the music.

Banjo Hangout Discussion Forums ARCHIVE - what is clawhammer?
Clawhammer refers to the hand positioning-it is like a claw with fingers bent in various positions and the "hammer" portion is because you have a technic to using 2 different fingers to hammer on certain strings.
Generally when you start out it is the bent middle finger that strikes the 1st string then the bent index finger that strums the rest of the strings then the thumb that hits the 5th string.
Getting back to the origianal question-"WHat is clawhammer?" it is a great way to play banjo, once all the infighting over exactly what technic/banjo brand etc is over.
