Wisconsin has an excellent free public school system, which was established in 1848 and which provides a graded system of instruction in country district and city schools, high schools and normal schools and the University of Wisconsin (incorporated 1848; see Wisconsin, University Of).
In 1800 Wisconsin was included in the newly organized Indiana Territory; and in 1809 on the admission of Indiana as a state it was attached to Illinois.

WISCONSIN, one of the East North Central states of the U.S., bordered on the N by Lake Superior and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, on the E by Lake Michigan, on the S by Illinois, and on the W by Iowa and Minnesota.
Wisconsin’s Indians became increasingly dependent on the trade and were inevitably drawn into the imperial wars of the late 1700s, fighting in the French and Indian War (1754–63) and on the side of the British during the American Revolution.
Wisconsin became part of the U.S. in 1783 at the end of the American Revolution, but U.S. control was not effectively established until the building of forts at Green Bay and Prairie du Chien in 1816.

Clay continued to serve both the Union he loved and his home state of Kentucky until June, 1852 when he passed away in Washington, D.C. at the age of 75.
Clay was the first person to lie in state in the United States Capitol.

In a dense fog seven miles south of the entrance to the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal, the barge and her escort tug, Duncan City, struck a shoal in an area known as Clay Banks.
As the vessels were being pulled from the banks by the tug Smith under a Captain Anderson, the Ida Corning struck a rock and broke off its shoe and rudder, necessitating a considerable repair.

In the last decades before the dawning of the second Millennium A.D., Late Woodland descendents of the Effigy Mound culture built a small village on the banks of the Crawfish River in what is now Jefferson County, Wisconsin.
Though they lived primarily on the west bank of the river, they may have built two simple earthen enclosures on the east bank.
These walls were covered with fired clay, and were supported by an embankment formed partially out of broken pottery, crushed bone, and other village debris.
