Henry Clay, American statesman and orator, was born in Hanover County, Virginia, on April 12, 1777, and died in Washington on June 29, 1852.
In 1832 Clay was unanimously nominated for the presidency by the National Republicans[?]; Jackson, by the Democrats.
The result threw Clay into paroxysms of rage, and he violently complained that his friends always used him as their candidate when he was sure to be defeated, and betrayed him when he or anyone could have been elected.

The 1854 legislation creating Clay County authorized the justices of the county's first inferior court to select a site to serve as county seat and to provide for erection of public buildings.
