Clay County (standard abbreviation: CY) is a county located in the state of Kansas.
When the first counties were created by the Kansas legislature in 1855, the territory within the present limits of the county was attached to Riley County for all revenue and judicial purposes.
In 1857 Clay was created and named in honor of the famous American statesman Henry Clay, a member of the United States Senate from Kentucky and United States Secretary of State in the 19th century.

Clay County was formed from parts of Vigo and Owen Counties; organization was made effective April 1, 1825, it was named for Senator Henry Clay who was three times a presidential hopeful.
Bowling Green, which was laid out in 1825, was selected as the first County Seat and held that distinction for fifty years until November 30, 1851, when the Courthouse and all the records were burned and a fight was begun to select a new location for the County Seat, Bellaire being the chief contender.
In 1872, the County Seat was ordered removed to Brazil, as a result of a petition on the part of those favoring that place, and the formal transfer was made January 26, 1877.

At 50 years of age she finally met the man she would marry.    A well-known engineer, he was hired to rebuild the big chimney for Dodge Copper smelter.    She made a name for herself, was a faithful member of the Methodist Church, and was a respected person in the community.
Hinshaw married, on October 20, 1898, Miss Mabel, daughter of A. Lawrence, a retired merchant of Clay Center.    She was born on her father's farm in Clay county on March 25, 1876.    Mr.
Hinshaw is a woman of culture, well informed, and is prominent in the social and religious life of Clay Center.    She is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and is assistant probation officer of Clay county.
