Pit 2 is located approximately 15 ft. south of Pit 1 and measures 11 ft. by 11 ft. The pit is a square recession in the ground that has been lined with boards to prevent cave-ins.
Pit 4 is located approximately 30 ft. south of Pit 3 and 60 ft. southwest of Pit 2 and measures 102 ft. by 21 ft. It is surrounded by a 1 ft. clay berm and has 2.5 ft. of available freeboard inside.

Watering dry clay pits should be done by loosening the clay to 4 or 6 inch dept by shovel and adding water (leave clay around the stake for a couple inches to prevent "slick" from building up..."slick" tends to "pump" up around the stake after the clay has been watered excessively).
Pitchers who expect to pitch in clay as well as sand during the year should be forewarned that pitches which land short of the stake and slide on for a ringer in a sand pit will not slide on clay and will remain a short shoe...a bad habit to watch out for.
The best characteristic of blue clay is that it does not build up on the horseshoe like some red clays, yet it does not leave a soapy, slippery feel (unless of course you are pitching in 'slick' (clay with heavy water mixture that causes thick, semi-liquid called slick).

This major Cornish clay producing company was formed from the amalgamation of many smaller clay producers in the early 1930s.
This is the only check that I've come across relating to the Cornish China clay industry, not that I'm particularly a collector of them, and I wondered if any of the keener collectors have any, as there seems to be an interesting story of the use of the check I have.
The Cornish clay pits don't have any underground workings (unlike the Devon ball clay ones) and so checks were not issued for the usual purpose of controlling and monitoring the movements of men into and out of the underground workings.

Berry (1916) suggested a tropical paleoenvironment laced with sluggish fresh water streams which allowed the suspended clay and organic materials to slowly settle out resulting in the formation of the clay deposits.

I recently saw some pots that were pit fired with much pink flashing.
the egde of the pit with the 'to be fired' pots.
I always cover the pit with tin after the fire burns down and don't pull the pots until they are cool to the touch.
