 Clay-colored Sparrow
Despite its subdued nature, a Clay-colored Sparrow can be spotted if a little time and patience are used to find the source of its odd song.
Clay-colored Sparrows are often overlooked because of their plumage, habit and voice-all expertly contribute to an introverted lifestyle.
Short, plaintive buzzes, despite their insect-like qualities, are produced by this small, subdued sparrow as it darts from aspen edges and shrubby fields.

The most noticeble markings on this bird are it's brownish crown and black streaks and whitish or buff colored central stripe, whitish eyebrow and pale lores.
Length 5 1/2 inches (14cm) This is a very majestic looking bird and seem to like to keep deep in the weeds as this image clearly shows.

Discussion The plowing of the prairies reduced the habitat of the Clay-colored Sparrow, but with the clearing of forests it has extended its range northeastward and now breeds in the eastern Great Lakes region.
A small sparrow with streaked crown and buffy upperparts and clear gray breast; similar to an immature Chipping Sparrow but brighter, with rump brownish buff instead of lead gray, sides of neck gray, and buff cheek patch bordered above and below with black.
Each spring and fall a few individuals, most of them immatures, appear on the Eastern Seaboard, where they can be difficult to distinguish from immature Chipping Sparrows, with which they often associate.

Journal, Sep 2000 - Stuart Healy, Western U.S. Bird Guide
Out again today with Bob and Toni Hartman from Silver Spring, MD. Our targets for the morning were Zone-tailed Hawk, Montezuma Quail, Common Poorwill, Thick-billed Kingbird and Five-striped Sparrow.
It was quite a warm day and bird activity wasn't particularly high, and we recorded only 25 species on the island including OSPREY, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, CALIFORNIA QUAIL, BELTED KINGFISHER, ACORN WOODPECKER, N. ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, SPOTTED TOWHEE, SONG SPARROW, WESTERN TANAGER and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD.
Save for BEWICK'S WREN, RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROW and lots of PINE SISKINS, that was all I saw for a while.

Sparrow departures included CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at Thornton Creek on 5/6 (DF), FOX SPARROW at Thornton Creek on 5/15 (DF), GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW at Yachats on 5/17 (SaL & KH) and Wandemere on 5/27 (RC), and this season's only CHIPPING SPARROW by 3 Rocks Road along the Salmon River in Lincoln County on 5/24 (PP).
Right now numerous dandelions are blooming, and the White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows are cleaning off the dandelion seed heads as fast as they open.
Although GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS overwinter at some sites, they are a spring and/or fall migrant at many sites; they arrived with a flourish in mid- to late April at Tidewater (BW) and Waldport (JW).
