Moore was so identified, both in his own mind and in the public mind, with the Ranger that he is the only person on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as of 2004, to have his character's name along with his on the star, which reads, "Clayton Moore — The Lone Ranger".
However, according to his publicist was in June, 1914, but it is common practice for actors to shave years off of their age in order to continue to be considered for leading roles which they might otherwise be considered too old for, and many believe that the year sometimes given, 1908, is probably more accurate.
Clayton Moore died in 1999 of emphysema and was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.

Moore died of a heart attack in the emergency room at West Hills Hospital, where he was taken early Tuesday, said Rick Miller, the hospital's vice president for business development.
Moore's film career stretched back to the 1930s, but essentially he was known only as "The Lone Ranger" in the TV Western series of that name and a couple of movie spinoffs.
Moore appeared in all but a couple of seasons in the early '50s when he sat out a contract dispute with the producers and actor John Hart replaced him.

Moore took the saddle--as a Texas lawman left for dead who returns to fight evil anonymously--when "The Lone Ranger" moved from radio to TV in 1949.
In 1978, the Wrather Corporation, which owned the rights to "The Lone Ranger," declared that the 60-something Moore was too old to play the hero in their new film and got a court injunction to keep Moore from donning his signature mask.

Bill Ward was Clayton's stand in and stunt double as well as one of the shows wranglers early in the TV series (1949 through 1954).

He said he believed with all his heart in the Ranger’s creed, which included the somewhat mysterious motto: “That God put the firewood there, but every man must gather it and light it himself.” The rest of the creed was relatively bland and included nothing at all about hunting down bad guys.
The toughest spot Moore ever found himself in was in 1979, when a movie company got an injunction to prevent him from wearing the mask.
