TMDL Case Study - West Fork of Clear Creek
As the Minnesota River enters the lower 25-mile reach, the combined effect of channel dredging and the backwater pool created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Dam No. 2 on the Mississippi River at Hastings transforms the Minnesota from a shallow, free-flowing stream to a deeper, low-velocity channel maintained for commercial navigation (MPCA, 1985a).
As part of the prioritization process, MPCA identifies segments like the lower Minnesota River where pollution problems may pose human health threats (a fish consumption advisory for PCBs is in place) and considers the relative importance of the resource to the surrounding population and the designated uses of the resource (e.g., for recreation).
Second, sampling is being conducted at the mainstem of the Minnesota River to measure the cumulative effect of all sources entering the river.

Minnesota's Pheasant Hunting Outlook   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
When there was a decent amount of land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in Minnesota, we had the cover but the winters were hard and the spring weather was wet so that there was little carryover for pheasants, and nesting success was marginal.
One of the beauties of southeastern Minnesota is that because of the rolling terrain and the large amount of drainage in this river country, there is more undisturbed cover available for pheasants.
Where the sloughs that were so prevalent in the southwest and south-central section of the state have all been drained and tiled, there is a lot of natural buffer left in the cornfields in the southeast.
