The county is home to North Fork of the Clearwater River, and a small portion of the South Fork of the Clearwater and the Clearwater.
Both the Clearwater, and the Lolo Pass, in the southeast corner of the county, were made famous by Lewis and Clark.
In the county the population was spread out with 23.00% under the age of 18, 5.90% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 29.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who were 65 years of age or older.

The town of Orofino on the Clearwater River, not to be mistaken for the old Oro Fino city near Pierce, was platted in 1898.
The area was annexed to Nez Perce County in December 1904 by a vote in a general election.
February 1911, the Idaho Legislature voided the act and established Clearwater County with Orofino as the county seat.

Clearwater County was originally in Washington Territory so the Washington Territorial Legislature included this area in Spokane County.
The original Shoshone County included parts of Montana, Idaho and Washington and travel from this area to the second county seat in Wallace took a person through five counties and two states.

This area was first formed as Lah-Toh County in 1864 with Coeur d'Alene as the county seat, in 1867 the name Lah-Toh was dropped when the area was placed in Nez Perce County.
In 1888 the U. Congress created the county as we know it, the 16th Idaho county and the only Idaho county created by Congress.
The name is Nez Perce and means "the place of pine trees and sestle," because the Indians found stones here suitable for pulverizing camas roots and shade under the pine trees in which to work.

Clearwater County, city officials, local businesses, landowners, citizens and representatives from several state and federal agencies have been evaluating landslide mitigation needs in Clearwater County, Idaho since September 2001.
Clearwater County Project Impact identified landslide hazards as a major threat to lives and property in Clearwater County and established “assessing landslide areas and producing landslide hazard maps of critical areas of the County” as its primary mitigation action.
Idaho Geological Survey mapped the surficial geology within the quadrangles and Terry Howard of Howard Consulting produced the hazard map.
