CLEAVANT DERRICKS (CONT'D) Young Eden Espinosa grew up as an orphan in the streets, singing this unfinished lullaby her father had written her mother, which had vague lyrics referencing the words "love" and "heart".
Cleavant Derricks then imparts some end of-play information that makes this entire fairy tale a lot less optimistic and hopeful, and confuses the show's notion of whether fairy tales can come true or are unrealistic.

dOc DVD Review: Sliders: The First and Second Seasons (1995/1996)
I've been known to carry longstanding grudges against brainless networks for screwing with shows that I really like, and for some reason Fox is always one of the major culprits.
One of the show's real strengths is Rhys-Davies, who, whether as a companion to Indiana Jones or as an axe-wielding dwarf in The Lord of the Rings, shows here that he has the right amount of frustrated, deep-voiced pomposity that serves as the foundation that holds the quartet of main characters together.
O'Connell is anonymously likeable, Lloyd is stiffly cute, and Derricks' Crying Man Brown may get all the genuinely broad laughs, but Rhys-Davies has a delivery that gives the show something approaching legitimacy, if for nothing other than his booming and distinctive speaking voice, which makes even the most tired exasperation sound engaging.

But in the end, all the film can come up with is that the Crudup character is redeemable because he's not such a bad dude after all.
On the road, Crudup meets a four-time married young waitress Delores (Allen) in Pennsylvania, who tells him "men are a temporary state of mind." She hooks him up with a construction job to keep him in town, where he meets Carl (Cleavant Derricks).
The only reason for watching such a shallow and worn drama is because of Crudup's subtle performance and how he deftly moves through the thin script by masking himself in deeply drawn-out inner psychological twists that give his character a somewhat fresh feel.
