Cleavon was regarded as a "Great Young Orator" (San Diego.) Where in his young teens he traveled throughout the city, accepting engagements to recite (by memory) the entire collection of "God's Trombones", by the great James Weldon Johnson.
In acknowledgement of his talent and his passion for the classics, Cleavon performed "Shakespeare in the park" - pro-bono for 3 or 4 summers prior to succumbing to the stomach ailment which he died from.
(Cleavon had had stomach problems (dating back to the late 50's) - from the demands he put on himself, striving for excellence.

Clevon Little stars as Bart, a fl railroad-worker who is used by villainous Hedley — "not Hedy" — Lamarr (Harvey Korman) and the buffoonish state governor (Brooks, who also appears as a Yiddish Indian Chief) in a dastardly land-snatch scheme.
Their purpose is to so offend the little frontier town's "white, God-fearing" folk (all named Johnson) that they'll abandon the territory to the new railroad Lamarr plans to build through it.
Occasionally a little spottiness is a reminder that we have print from 1974 here, but overall we get a first-rate restoration that delivers the goods.

Mel Brooks scored his first commercial hit with this raucous Western spoof starring the late Cleavon Little as the newly hired (and conspicuously fl) sheriff of Rock Ridge.
To my delight it turned out to be one of the freshest and most engaging comedies I've seen in ages even though it may have been released 28 years ago.
Gene Wilder is brilliant as the Waco Kid and Cleavon Little gives a great performance as the 'fl sheriff'.

The moral should be (and probably is) obvious and politically acceptable, that you should not prejudge a person by their colour, and the humour should be directed against the racists - but somehow the repeated use of "nigger" etc leaves the modern audience shocked and unable to see much humour.
Always a little puerile, Mel Brooks attempts to make humour out of an unpleasant situation fail modern definitions of sensitivity, and I can see why this is so poorly distributed nowadays.
